The Paintings Group (a subset of Group D) is a set of three structures intended for ceremonial purposes. The "paintings" refer to the fact that in two of its buildings there are traces of murals. Here is evidence of the two periods of occupation at Coba - classic and post-classic. Structure #1 is the highest building in the series. Its foundations dating from the late classic comprise four distinctive sections with rounded corners. The small temple on top dates from the post-classic. Structure #1 is also referred to as the Temple of the Frescoes.
