Walking on the streets of Puerto Vallarta is a challenge. At every corner someone will call you - Hola amigo .... and there we start a conversation that always ends up with the intention to drag me into some tourist tailored adventure. The prices for such usually purely adrenaline driven entertainment were without exceptions prohibitively high. Not exactly my type of thing to do - I mean the expensive - not the adrenaline ;-)

So, I took two buses at the price of 10 cents each, driving first to the old town center and than heading south, along the sea to Boca de Tomatlan . On route, 12km south of Puerto Vallarta, you will pass some rocks about 500m offshore called Los Arcos. The area is protected as a breeding ground for pelicans, boobies and other sea birds. The park is a popular snorkeling destination both for the rocks themselves and for the dead coral fossilized coral beds that surround them.

To get to this unique and most beautiful place you can pay a high end boat tour of at least US$ 150 or you can take the bus for times two 10 cents and swim to it - it’s your choice. My wife and I choose option #2. Option #1 would have given me the advantage of some precious POV's at high expense. I obviously did not take my Nikon D200 for a 1km swim. I hide the camera somewhere before I plunged into the water and swam to the rocks and back.

Hi Peter!
A tecnical perfect image with great sharpness overall. The composition is excellent with your low POV and these rocks in the foreground, and the diagonal af this wave. It`s a nice view at this bizarre island and the colors and contrast are amazing.A great shot!!!

As cores ficaram muito boas an foto!
Parabéns e Abraço!

Hello,
Nice shot with lots of interesting elements.
I also like the great variety of colors.
Greetings.

Hi Peter, beautiful and dramatic shot of this seascape, well done, everything is perfect, composition, position of view and exposure simply brilliant, well done, thanks for sharing it with us and keep them coming, regards, Salas

Hi Peter,
fantastic view over the sea with the little boat and the giant rocks, well covered with green. The low POV works very well; the foreground definition is perfect.

Hi Peter,

Well, it seems the adventure has been interesting, and finally it has been justified! Very nice place, and as always very nice capture! The vell lightned rocks in the foreground and a very good starting point, guiding us to the little little island. The color of the sea is magnificent too! Very nice!

Greetings,
Angel.

Hi peter
It's really one of the best picture of this place that I have ever seen. I like the colors and almost the composition with different layers from the rocks on the FG to the island in the BK with also sea strips.
I really like this shot.

Great use of the foreground and the background to create a good sense of depth, because each seems in clear focus, with lots of details - the result is that it seems like we are actually there. Good colour and contrast too, which enhances the realism and the sense of looking at a live scene rather than a photo. Well done!

Hi Peter,
Well, this is a nice one with a great view thanks to your low angle. The image is very clear with lots of brightness which makes this image very plesant to look at.
That 150 dollar is indeed crazy, that bus trip must be much nicer.

Oi Peter,
Wagner.

Peter,
I would have taken also option #2, providing that there are no sharks in the area!
Lovely photo, amazing sharpness on the fg, good low POV and well composed. I like it!

Oi Peter,

Peter, you did such excellent work showing the contrasting textures of water and rock, perfect composition and soft but still sharp well balanced coloring with a right contrast.
Cheers,
Francesco

Hi Peter. The combination of low angle and foreground interest is the apt choice here, as it results in an almost 3D impression and a good rendering of the depth. All this complemented by the vivid yet natural-looking colors. Nice shot, I hope all is well.

OI Peter
Felicitations.

Hi Peter, A wonderful low POV, you have captures the shallow waves nicely as they splash against the rocks, a very beautiful scene as the light is superb & the sky is so clear, wonderful depth through out, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Salut Peter ! Very nice rock work and I like the bit of frozen water going over the stone. A good "investment" your bus ride, and I am sure it was a little adventure itself besides the swimming part in open waters ... I am always scared what swims around below me but probably I have seen too many movies :) This is very nice ... vacation pure. Barbara.

Good use of the FG rocks and good placement of the Los Arcos island.

Hi Peter...
Great idea this composition very near from the water.. It gives a great perspective.
The choice of a quite slow speed is also a winner: wawes who are breaking on the rocks gives movement and dynamism...

Hello Peter,
very informative your note about Mexico, but even more the seascape view of the rocky offshore,Los Arcos. The rocks as you captured create a great depth of field with fascinating colours and light. The high cluster of rocks in the background create an almost end in the scenery.Well done Peter.

Hi Peter,
technically flawless, but the overall feel is what strikes me more than anything else in this shot. It's like being out there, sitting on a rock in the salty breeze, simply looking at this wonderful landscape.
Great effort.

Bonsoir Peter,

Hello Peter -

Well done! This is a much better post than your previous one. I do like the FG rocks and the sharpness associated with them. Exposure and other technicals look to be spot on the money. Great way to explore by taking the bus rather than the tourist conveniences. Well done.

Thank you for sharing.

Hello Peter,
A very appealing low pov of Los Arcos. Lighting and depth are good. I chuckle as I read you Note about tourist tailored adventure. So true. Regards, Danilo

as it is cold and rainy around here lately your mexico shots are like medicine to me... i wouldnt mind walking along that shore with a corona in my hand... without lemon of course...

beautiful shot, i like the low pov and the dynamism in it thanks to the waves...

cheers

I don't think a $150 boat ride would have given you a better POV than this, Peter. You have framed this perfectly, and the deep DOF works well with the foreground rocks nicely in focus. And catching the waves breaking over the rocks in the middle distance adds another good element to this composition. Obviously you hid your D200 well to take a swim otherwise we wouldn't be seeing this. I don't think I would have chanced that with my D200. I would have foregone the swim ;) Cheers . . . David

Hi Peter,

I like the low POV which gives a refreshing fell to the picture due to the splashing water on the rocks.

Hi Peter,
This is a good example of where the interesting foreground is extended far into the frame to dominate, with the background features complementing and balancing. The clarity of detail is superb, as is the light management. I think you and your wife were rather wise in choosing option number two...later.
John

Hi Peter,
A coastline image that looks quite dramatic and from the note I understand I will never spend a day in Puerto Vallarta, wise idea to get off the city for a seaside refreshment rather than an overpriced refreshment, Your pov appears quite low and gives an enhanced importance to the foreground rocks and the small waves breaking on them, which I like but the big background rising one that appears quite similar to some existing in Thailand is nice as well.
Have a nice sunday JY

Hi Peter!

A beautiful place, a fantastic beach with these wonderful and colourful rocks playing an important role both in FG and BG. Great compositions, great contrast, top quality definition. Excellent note, too! Congratulations!

Hi Peter,

Wonderful photograph again :) Great composition, great details, great colors; congratulations !

Haluk Derinöz

Hello Peter! Very strong wide angle composition with good foreground interest leading the eye nicely to the well placed horizon and interesting seastacks. You captured a nice range of warmly saturated colors. I sense these interesting foreground rocks would have great long exposure potential.

Well done!
Doug

Hi Peter
It`s not good don`t know enough the language. I read twice before I understood that you swam there without your camera :).
Great capture from this low point of view. Lovely place and sweet colours. I`m a bit jealousy about the weather ;).
Regards

Peter,
Splendid colors and composition. The yellowish rocks in the foreground really contrast quite nicely with the strikingly blue sea.
Dinkar

Hi Peter,
I think the Los Arcos in PV are much more attractive than the ones in Cabo - I think it's the green trimming from the more tropical climate or perhaps it's your up-close-and-personal framing style with the surf-line creating a triangle with the arches.

Congratulations on your excellent hiding skills!! The $150 you saved would have been a poor start on purchasing a new camera. Perhaps you're just hoping to get a new D-300. Although, I saw an advertisement for a D200 body at around $600.
HLJ, Pat

Felicitaciones.
Un fuerte abrazo amigo.

Very nice shot especially for almost midday. Good compostion too! The greenery adds a lot of pop to it.

Hi, Peter. A very good shot with excellent depth and contrast thanks to the rocks you've put in the foreground. Your low POV gives more importance to Los Arcos, whose white rocks stand out against the blue sky. The sharpness and the light are fantastic.

Hi Peter,

It's by reading the note on your today's post that I've followed the thread to discover this wonderful photo that I haven't seen previously.

Boy! This is great!!! Excellent low and wide angle view, with beautiful rocks formation as a perfect foreground. The textures and colours of these rocks are particularly rich.

The rest of the image is also very impressive, with this picturesque island in the background and the breaking waves in between. Excellent work!

Hello Peter,
I remember seeing this one night when I was leaving on an errand and never got back to view it again.
The rocky beach mimics the great rocks in the ocean and are a great benefit to the image as their like shapes correspond well together and add a sense of "Being."
Excellent focal point low to the water and rocks, and perfect DoF.
Well Done...

Hello Peter
This is a nice one and different thanks largely to the low POV, close to the wave beaten smooth rocks. The islands of Los Arcos stands out against the pristine blue sky. There are quite a few boats as it appears & they help us understand the scale. Excellent colours in very good light.

Helşlo Peter,

How nice to get so much information and such a nice panorama of Puerto Vallarta and Los Arcos. I just happen to in love with your picture which shows with the wide angle the close-up rocks and continues to the infinite. I also note that the light is lateral which causes the rocks to be lighter one side and darker on the right: For me it is vital.
Happy week-end - Izzet

your gallery is a great booster to a travel junkie's (like yours truly) cravings... what a scene. even after accounting for the high-cost "touristy" aspects of the place. lol, you must be quite brave to hide your camera under some rocks there. anyway, great job as usual on capturing the scene. even though yours is not the most expensive POV available there, i still love it.
