Photographer's Note
This altar is the finest of those objects removed from the site of La Venta to Parque La Venta in Villahermosa (VSA). The central figure, wearing an elaborate headdress, emerges from a cave or entrance to the netherworld holding a jaguar baby, possibly dead. On the sides (separate uploads), there are four seated men carrying were-jaguars; the latter are gesticulating and squalling in a lively manner. The children have deformed heads in the Olmec fashion.
