Photographer's Note
The main feature of the site of La Venta, one might even say its centrepiece, is the large clay pyramid that rises up some 34 metres. It, too, was built on a platform to compensate for flooding, and is believed to have been rectangular in shape, with stepped sides and inset corners. I climbed the stepped path to the top, and looked back, to the north, where I had started out this day. In the distance, the three basalt heads may be seen along with the ruins of structures in Complex A.
