Photographer's Note

As I walked the site of La Venta, the message finally sank in (not to mention my feet). The Olmecs had little more than sand and clay and water and vegetation with which to build their society - one of significant achievement, and critical for the future of Mexico. I looked around, seeing here and there pieces of sculpture sitting, almost, triumphantly in the grass. This sculpture is called La Abuela - the grandmother in Spanish. She is depicted as kneeling, holding a plate in both hands, a shawl of some kind appearing to drape her head and the back.
