El Grito (the shout!)...

The Grito has been celebrated since 1810, when Father Manuel Hidalgo called out for the people of Mexico to rise up for independence.

In this plaza, at the Alhondiga de la Granaditas, was where the first battle of the revolution took place. Later, leaders of the revolt heads were hung from hooks in this square, including Padre Hidalgo's. The hooks remain (just near the 2007 sign).

But these days, on September 15, at 23:00, with flags flapping, smoke and foam blowing in the lights, mariachis playing.... thousands gather and shout in unison.

Viva Guantajuato! Viva Mexico! Viva! Viva!

I hope the movement shows the mood from where the photo was taken. In every direction from here there were people crowded in to celebrate. We stood in the middle and shouted too.
