Photographer’s Note

As I was walking toward the Chateau Frontenac for an early morning shot, I was able to see a promising sunrise coming up, but I wasn't expecting to shoot in this direction and I had no subject to complement the sunrise.

As I was running in direction of the Dufferin terrasse to find an angle, I expected to find nothing when suddenly, I've noticed this boat slowly moving on the Saint. Lawrence...

I was very lucky to get the boat and the light at the same time, because the synchronisation of both only last few seconds.

The cruise ship is the MAASDAM from Holland America Line. I just put some technical specs, which are impressive, even if it's not an oversized one.

C'est une image magnifique, la couleur du ciel est sublime, les reflets des lumières du bateau au premier plan sont un plus. La composition est très réussie. d'après ta note je la verrai bien dans la catégorie "Moment Décisif".

Most impressive image, André. And I envy so much your imagination for titles and notes. I'm actually imagining you running desperately from one side to another in the terrace like a cartoon...The transformation of the colors on the sky until it gets yellow around the spier in the horizon is amazing. And the tones on the water. And the reflection of the ship. And even the smoke coming out of the chimney - a small detail that makes the image more alive. Great balance of horizontals. Fantastic shot.

Les couleurs dans le ciel, qui se réfléchissent à la surface de l'eau, m'ont fait de suite pensé à qui on avait à faire ;))
Un bon timing et un cadrage pil poil! Un autre détail intéressant est celui de la réflexion des lumières du bateau.

Salut André,
Il y a un très bel effet avec la pose relativement lente.
Je me demandais avec quelle focale tu as pris cette belle photo. Tu as bien cadré le reflet. J'aime bien aussi le petit panache de fumée. Très bon moment de photo capturé.
Un très beau ciel, il me fait penser au film "Duel au Soleil" ou "Autant en emporte le vent".

Là, tu as vraiment cumulé : un improbable lever de soleil, le soleil pile derrière un clocher et ce bateau éclairé qui vient se mettre pile-poil où il faut. Veinard va! Certains trouveront peut-être le résultat un peu kitsch au niveau couleurs, moi j'aime bien!

Ton paquebot me comble d'aise, question couleurs... Le soleil levant fait un très joli contrepoint aux reflets des lumières des cabines sur l'eau.

You make me proud. Look who's there, are own Maasdam, together with the Statendam they are the cruisaders of the oceans ;-)
There was a time all emigrants came to the west with the Holland America Line, now they take the plane and others take the cruise to relax....
Luck was on your side here, but luck is not enough, that sky is awesome and the reflecting light in the water look just great.
A great shot....subject and technical it's a great shot...lucky you..!!!

bien joué ! comme quoi la chance du photographe existe et quand elle tombe sur un artiste forcément ça donne une belle image. j'aime beaucoup la lumière et maintenant qu'on a vu cette photo avec le bateau on se rend compte que sans lui cette image aurait été presque trop banale. Bravo.

Hi Andre,
I am assuming that the ship was named after the village of Maasdam in the South of the Netherlands, or the Maas river.
It's so pretty with all those pinks and purples and the clarity is really impressive. One of the details I like most is that point sticking out of the horizon with the yellow of the sun surrounding it. The shot is really well composed and executed with the four distinct horizontal layers of sky, land, boat and then water reflections, and fits perectly into the frame on the sides.

Superbe image avec de superbes couleurs (naturelles ?) qui donne au MAASDAM un environnement original.

Cette image pourrait très facilement être dans la brochure d'une agence de la Holland America Line

Ces mauves et roses sont vraiment de couleurs de nana. Le genre que j'aime porter aussi. On voit vraiment tous les détails du bateau. Pourquoi ne pas vendre l'image à la compagnie pour leur catalogue ? Le vapeur qui sortent ajoutent à l'ambiance.

Rarely I'm in the mood for sunsets/sunrises, but this one
is so visually appealing that I have to say - WOW!!!
I wish we had such a beautiful sunrises over here (okay,
we have - but the cloud formation is never like this one).
Also, I'm surprised to see how the boat retained this
pristine white in spite of heavy reds in the sky and its
(sky's) reflection in the sea! Plus, amazing contrast!

Tu vois qu'y a bas besoin d'aller a bali pour avoir des effets spectaculaires dans le ciel, c'est dispobible pres de chez toi faut juste se lever pour aller le chercher, tu l'as fait bravo la radiation de la lumiere sur ces nuages est superbe, en plus tu combines ici avec un avant plan de qualite et une tres bonne clarte dans l'image, tout bon.

Wow, what colours! This one really leaps out of the frame, with vivid reds and pinks. Who can resist such a beautiful scene? Not me, that's for sure! Thanks for sharing.
