Photographer’s Note
After visiting the First Nations Cultural Centre north of Saskatoon we noticed this storm fast approaching. I took a lot of shots trying to capture some lightning and this was the only one that was successful.

Hello Phil,
This is great! The huge, textured sky...the tiny, sharp bolt of lightning...We can feel the vastness of this space and the fierceness of the storm.

Hello Phil -
I think this is a wonderful image. The cloud patterns are really interesting. I like that you captured some lightning behind one of the many grain elevators. This add so interest to the scene and along with the lightning makes the image work. Focus on the sky was a great decision on your park. Well done!
Thank you for sharing.

Hi Phil,
Very natural sky with superb detail in the clouds in this great composition. The small lighting is nearly visiable but has high impact in the overal composition and framing.
Perfect piece of work, i like it.

Hello Phil,
This is an enviable photo with multi layered clouds, their tones and lightening too. Very clever idea and an excellent capture while reserving huge space for cloudy sky. Congratulations.

Hi Phil,
Great prarie image with the vast stormy sky dominating the landscape. The little bit of lightening spring from the green grass looks very dramatic. I'll bet this sight is not taken lightly by the locals.

Hi Phil.
The scene here is definitely the sky. Awesome. The shard of slighlt brighter land and the fork of lightning are understated but all the more powerful for being so. A really outstanding image. Regards, Paul.

Bonjour,

Quite a daring composition with just a tiny sliver of land. It needs to be there and the small amount works well, as the image is all about the sky and the tiny flash of lightening. Especially eye-catching are the blue diagonal lines in the clouds. Good luck and good timing prevailed. Well done

Hi Phil, very subtile tones on this soft but stormy clouds. That you catch the lightning is ofcourse wonderful.

Hi Phil,
one of the best skies I've had the pleasure to see lately, color and detail are superb!
Great framing and excellent timing. I know, you had to take lots of shots to get some lighting, but it sure paid off in the end. Love the gigantic impression of vastness you've been able to create by keeping the praire in foreground as thin as possible.
Top notch!
Cheers,
Fulvio.

This is an interesting one Phil;
Sharpness looks good, no noise, pretty good levels in the sky- however I'd be tempted to selectively brighten the ground (ie: without adjusting the sky).
Nice work in capturing the lightening strike... shame it wasn't just a tad closer eh (not too close of course- haha).
I would suggest a slight lens correction to fix the bending.
Possible you could send me the original to do a workshop on Phil? (danielswalsh@mac.com)
Cheers buddy!

Hi, Phil -
Talk about the power of minimalism! This is an excellent use of the concept, not to mention the lightning capture. And the clouds are arranged precisely so that they point to the main elements.
Best,
Dan

Hey, Phil,
I make myself laugh every time I open one of your shots thinking, "WOW!". This is awesome. I love all that feeling of space and those marvelous heavy clouds. That lightning strike though, is just TOO cool. I especially like the way the two sort of trees frame the lightning bolt. Spectacular catch! Thanks and take good care,

Phil,
an interesting PP here to get rid of the noise originated by the scanning. The softness of the image stands very much in contrast with the fury of themoment. That storm is about to hit you furiously and giving you the warning with that extremely well placed lightning. Did you do some special offer to the gods of the weather to get that lightning at this exact moment and exact place in your composition? You're GOOD!

Phil,
This photo is gorgeous. I like the point of view that allowed you to capture the entire sky in front of you. The sky looks as though it is just about to open and let out a radiance of light. Great capture.

Hi Phil. One can almost hear the gods in some sort of dispute in the heavens, for what else can create such a dynamic and intimidating presence.Could it be a masterful composition with the thin sliver of earth and an overbearing sky? Great stuff. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Phil,
This is a very impressive shot. Although the flash of lightning is relatively small, it really is the main focal point of the picture, particularly with the layers of cloud that seem to converge on it. I like the way you've used a tiny strip of land to create a sense of perspective and convey the immensity of the sky.
Have you ever considered a lightning trigger (e.g. www.lightningtrigger.com)? I only found out they existed a few days ago but look like quite an interesting gadget to keep in the bag.

Hi Phil,
Those Prairie storms are fascinating but kind of scarry! I have a lot of respect for lighting! It looks like you were a safe distance away. When I watch the "Storm Chasers" on tv, standing out in the open looking at tornados, I am thinking the tornados would be the least of my worries. I feel that in their situation, that the lighting landing all around them is much more dangerous. Anyway, an outstanding job of composition by placing only a minimal portion of the ground on the lower part of the frame and concentrating on the amazing clouds and the lightning. A powerful and provacative rendition of the fury of nature!
