La gare fut construite de 1896 à 1898 selon les plans de Bruce Price, l'architecte du Château Frontenac à Québec. Le bâtiment accueille ses premiers visiteurs en août 1898. En 1911-1912, face à une demande trop forte, le CP déménage la gare dans un édifice attenant, sur la rue Berri.
En 1935, l'hôtel ferme ses portes, malgré de vives oppositions. Le gouvernement du Canada louera et occupera l'édifice de 1939 à 1950. Presque un an plus tard, le 17 octobre 1950, la Ville de Montréal achète le complexe et ferme définitivement la gare. Depuis les travaux de rénovation entrepris en 1954-1955, l'ancienne gare-hôtel héberge certains locaux administratifs du gouvernement municipal.


Place Viger was both a grand hotel and railway station in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, constructed in 1898 and named after Jacques Viger, Montreal's first mayor. Although combined stations and hotels were common in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century, the concept was unique to Canada.
Place Viger was designed by Bruce Price for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and was built near what was then the central core of Montreal, in proximity to the financial district, the city hall, the port and the court house.- Wikipedia
