Although I live on the west coast of North America, I feel equally at home in New Brunswick, where my maternal ancestors were among the first settlers in the St. John River Valley in the late 1700's. This is the view from my cabin on the edge of the woods looking north up the Valley. Until recently this was an unspoiled mosaic of woods and patchwork fields. However, politicians decided to re-route the Trans-Canada Highway and as a result thousands of acres of woods and farmers' fields have been despoiled by a new four lane highway which is due to open in about a week's time.

Many farmers have had their farms split in two and cannot easily access the other side. But the biggest loss has been for the wild animals. New Brunswick is home to large populations of deer, moose, bear, foxes, and other creatures whose habitat has been disrupted or destroyed. A wildlife fence has been erected along the course of the new highway to protect animals from crossing. This means that the resident female bear on my hill will have to seek new habitat, as she no longer can access the lower swamp from my woods, and black bears need a minimum territory to survive.

So when the big trucks and tourists start roaring down the road you see curving below in this photo, I will not be cheering. But that is said to be progress, and indeed the new highway will be safer than the old two lane road. The animals and the farmers will just have to grin and bear it...

Hi John,

Excellent composition, I like very much this great landscape, the nice autumn colors. Unhappyly the wild life paid a high price with the "progress".

Greetings from Brasil
Leonor

HI John,

This is a very nice photo. I love the colors and great light in this photo. Very sharp. What's a beautiful autumn.

Wow, that's some glorious fall colour on the trees there, something I really wish we had here. The contrast between the smooth and flat farm fields and the rugged hills of the forest is quite striking in this shot. I like the way you used the curving road too, which adds some important visual interest in the middle ground. Excellent as usual!

Hi John,
Building roads has two sides.... it helps us to get somewhere, but also it destroys nature and split farming lands in two! It looks real huge, that highway... Nice autumn colors are there and a good framing in 3 layers(FG, forest, sky) Good quality photo.

Progress indeed. The layers of colour bring our eyes to the image and the road acts as a leading line to the patch of colour further away. Nicely seen John.

John,
the sadness of your note and the sinuoid highway in your shot is compensated with the pristine and colorful palette of landscape that is bein presented with this post.
Progress has its most moments and I can share with you the sadness of this moment. For the animals that will be some similar tragedy as is must have been for those people separated over decades by the wall in Berlin.
Regards, Peter

Hi John,
superb landscape with wonderful autumnal colors and splendid light, very well done,

Bonjour John

Hello John

What a landscape ! Colors and light are great.
The yellow line in the foreground which goes through the picture offer an excellent contrast, and the curving road makes a dynamic picture.
A great composition, thank you.

The colors in the first trees lane are beautiful. Almost dazzling !
It could have been the only purpose of the shot but you add extra interest with the perspective. Just a little sceptical about the road...
Stéphane

Nice one, John, the POV is really amazing, as it permits to combine the curved perspective of the road with several horisontal layers of interest, which "frame" the curve from top and bottom. Very good.

Cheers
Alexander

Hi John,

Still a beautiful photograph of this superb area under the colors of autumn. I like the foreground with this original light due surely to a cloud which was to pass at this time. Beautiful depth in the image too. Pretty John work and thank you for the interesting note, it is true that these main roads are not very beautiful in the landscape but as you say it is progress and especially the need to go always more quickly.

With all my friendships,

Jean-Charles

Hi John

A good, high vantage point & superb warm colours from the Autumn foliage. Good sharpness, lighting contrasts, & pov. I like the curved roads too. Tfs!

Hello John,
I like the contrasts in this very fine composition between arable land and forest and distant hills. The winding road also adds much to the overall balance of the scene. Superb colours and clarity. Excellent quality work.

Hi John,
Sad story about the highway, in Europe when a highway is built in such an area they organize dedicated protected bridges over it for the animals to cross, they are protected with trees and bushes to look like tunnels so they are less scared by the traffic. That being said a nice overlooking pov and nice fall colors to see on this far reaching view. You might want to clone this ugly highway ;-)
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hello John
Great composition withh beautiful colours and contrasts. The sharpness ois perfect.
Well done
Regards
Claude

Nice shot John, a nice long range view not unlike those of NY State Throughway. Your colors are warm and rich and it seems you had good weather; I see no hit of haze or cloud. Too bad about the highway, progress as you point out is relentless, congratulation on the shot, condolences on the progress.

Greg

John,
A wonderful place, i would stay day and night here making pictures, this is something that never would to bore you. Wonderful soft tones in an excellent pallet of colors.
Hope you also have a more close-up on the trees without to much things around it, because those colors are really amazing.
Regards, Henk

Hi John,
A very striking image of the New Brunswick landscape. Very expansive view composition with great depth and perspective. Good note too. TFS. Gerald

An interesting and informative note. A very sad story. The scenery is so beautiful!!! And this is a fantastic picture!! TFS

Progress indeed! Unfortunately the wildlife will always come second! You couldn't have chosen a better time of year to bring this to our attention as the autumn colours are beautiful. Excellent high POV. Next week more pollution!

Hello John
The reds and oranges just pop in this pic and contrast so well against the green. The DOF is impressive, but it's the colours that make this a winner.

Hi John,
Big contrast between the stright, barren strip in the FG and the road curving through the fall colors that stretch to the horizon. I'm sorry you will be losing your bear. Althhough we have no bear, I'm increasing fond of my ltlle dirt road and all the neighborhood wildlife; although the deer have headed down to Christmas Valley for the winter.

I always smile when I see your name because I know I'm in for a treat.

Hi John
Sadly, this is seen almost everywhere, always the better lands going the way of the dodo bird.
I must say that you have a lovely sight from your place, the colors of fall makes it even better.
The inclusion of the piece of culture land in the foreground, cutting transversely, gives the feeling that we are there, standing and looking out.
Also, the three elements of your text are there, the farmlands, the woods and the road,,,but, but wherre is the bear?
Have a good day
Charles

Hi John,

I like the three levels in this picture. The dark autumn colours on the hill, the more soft tones of the vegetation in the mid zone of the picture and the clear yellow in front.
The road brings a cheerful curve in the composition.

Hi John,
The lovely autumn colours spreading right into the distance rightly describe the beauty of this place and your inclusion of the fast moving roads in the foreground and further down below make your statement even more forceful. I also like how this viewpoint stretch our vision into the distant mountains as if contemplating on what is to come in the future. Well done!!!

Hello John
Interesting autumnal landscape, very nice warm colours; it will be also great to make a stitched panorama.
The before winter season arrived very fast this year.
Well done.
Cheers.

Hi John. That view could just as easily be around where I live. It looks like you were close to being at peak when you took this. I might prefer having a river down there but then you would miss the whole point of progress being unstoppable no matter how painful it might be.

Hi John
i like teh beautifull colors you get here. The light is nice on this landscape.
Typical vision of Automn
Well done

Hi John,
Interesting pov, beautiful light to give strong colours, nice fall tones, tfs.

Hi John
I don't think such a road would have been allowed to be built in Switzerland, there would have been too many protests both by farmers and by the increasingly popular ecologists.
The only thing positive is that the road creates a focal point in amongst the beautiful autumn leaves. I like the lines of green and brown in the foreground too.
Regards
Nikki

A sad story but a beautiful photo, but the road is still at a safe distance, isn't it ? Splendid autumn colours,
Congratulation,
Catherine

Wonderful shot. Warm colour of the leafs are wonderful. Interesting to the curved highway. Well composed.

Hello John,

I have enjoyed this last series — the photograph before and the one after. The note is poignant, in the name of progress what travesties...

A beautiful sweeping image with a sad but true commentary (though I confess to feeling worse for the animals than the farmers.)

Hello John, excellent composition and an eqally interesting note. Here in Luxemburg we have animal crossing on the motorways. They are covered with grass and planted with bushes and trees. The farmers pass underneath and the animals overhead.

Wow, what a view! I'd like a cabin like that! I love the expansive view you have and it makes it especially beautiful with these amazing fall colors. The lighting is amazing, the layers of colors are stunning and I love the beautiful details! Excellent work, John!

Greetings,

PS: Finally I have a little time for TE again, been very busy lately...Take care!

You are lucky to have such a fabulous view from your cabin, John, and all those autumn colours must make September the best time of the year to be there. Sad story about the wildlife, but that's happening all over the world. The layers in your composition help to create a lot of depth, and I love the soft light. Cheers . . . David
