Photographer’s Note
Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) build their nests in the tops of trees on the edge of lakes in Ontario in the springtime.
This pair of nests is part of a colony of seven nests on the shore of Fairy Lake, a tiny lake on a small island in the middle of Stony Lake in the Kawarthas. I found it unusual that they would build their nests so close together in this upstairs/downstairs fashion.
The Great Blue Heron is the largest heron in North America, weighing about 2.5 kg and with a wingspan of over 2 meters it is an impressive bird in flight. Learn more about herons here.
