A warm summer morning on South Pender Island, looking southeast toward Blunden Isle, a marine park. The whales, dolphins, and otter pass through here regularly and the inter-tidal areas off the shore teem with shellfish, clams, and a diverse array of plant life. Beyond the little isle is seen the outline of Otcas Island in the state of Washington.

Pender Island is one of a cluster of southern Gulf Islands being uniquely isolated from the mainstream populations of Vancouver and southern Vancouver Island and I am priveleged to have a retreat here where a magical tranquillity prevails and one's biggest problem typically is keeping the otter from nesting beneath the cabin. The southern Gulf Islands are the only region in Canada designated as having a northern Mediterranean climate.

Hi John, amazing view, just a little bit blurred on the foreground rocks, but with a really beautiful view on the sea and the distant capes and the ship.
the light and the pastel tones are excellent, as the POV.
thanks, ciao

Hej John,
Lovely view, I really like the light, gives a kind of magic mood to the area. Also the calm water works well here. I find the composition good with these stones placed in the foreground. Very nice work! Thanks for sharing!

Hi John,

This is a nicely composed image with subtle warm colours and several layers leading back into the photo.

Witaj John!
Your photo is nicely. Wonderful landscape. I like the colors, light and depth. Good work.

Olá John, what a magical place to have a retreat, such a peaceful spot in the wild, far away from the civilized world and sharing the bed with some careless otters ;-) That's what I miss here: an otter playing in the water ;-)
This seems almost like a sepia convertion - I wonder about a b&w option, even if this warm light gets lost. You must have been really close to this blurred foreground, since you have f/7.1 of aperture. I kind of like the effect, even if the sharpness isn't the best. I like the zig-zag effect of the composition and the rhythm of all the successive layers seen while going to the background. The light reflection on the water is beautiful and if that white stripe are low clouds resting on the water, it's a fantastic effect that should worth to see in a closer shot.

Bonsoir, John,

You always seem to get such great shots from the Gulf Islands, with atmosphere that gives a nice sense of depth or distance. The series of islands, near, middle and distant, all with different colour tone and clarity gives this depth. Great work!

Hello John -

A very nice and pleasing composition, as usual. I take it the sun is not up yet as the shadows in the foreground and the island are rather deep. IMO, the shadows on the island are just a bit too deep rendering not detail at all. The transition between cold pre-dawn light to the warm dawn light is really evident and is pleasing to the eye. All in this is a very nice image.

Thank you for sharing

John

Bonjour John,
de toutes autres couleurs ici, le cadre toujours séduisant de ces paysages un pêu sauvages et avec des brumes inquiétantes lorsqu'on y navigue.
Le premier plan ajoute de la profondeur à la scène.
Have a great week=end.
Daniel.

Hi John,
Very beautiful capture.
Very nice colors and superb background.

Thanks and best wishes. Uğur

Hello John,

Superb shot, composed flawlessly. The stark contrast of light and shadow, the fog hanging over he water, the glow in the atmospere — all work in concert, like the instruments of a good orchestra. To one of my students, I would have assigned an A+ for this shot, and apologized for giving an inadequate grad.

Enjoy the weekend,

Bulent

Hi John,
What a great shot of Pender. You achieved amazing depth of field with the unique rock formations in the forground, the island a ways out, and then the mountains in the distance. A very serene warm and welcoming morning view over the peaceful waters of the Pacific. I am interested in the square format - when I visualize the image, I can see that a portrait vertical would not do justice and the overall expanse is to broad for the typical 800 x 600 most of us use. Great work and thanks for sharing. Gerald

What a beuatiful light you got on this mazing view. The compsotion is excellent with the different layers. Looks like there are many islands a bit like in Golfe du Morbihan in Brittany. very nice shot.

Hi John,

We pass without transition from the coldness of the winter to the heat of the summer. Pretty panorama on this island. I like very much the tone gilded of the image which accentuates the effect of heat. A pleasant sight and very resting, thank you John.

Hi John,
Always superb pictures in your gallery with colors a little different from the other pictures, I like this one too..!

Hi John,
That soft light through the mist, the bank of fog laying off and that sailboat anchored there awaiting more adventures. the mood is so true here it just makes me happy to look at your photo. HLJ, Pat

Bonjour John,
The DOF with the cliffs in the mist deserves itself the smiley.
I agree with Paolo for the disturbing blurred foreground, but again the depth is very nice.
Regards,
JB.

As usual you have captured beautiful early morning light with a lovely shine on the water. I like the way you have used the strong foreground diagonal so that it leads seamlessly to the island. You have captured a wonderful moody atmosphere added to by the line of mist and the tiny boat.

Hi John,
A great POV on that majestic coast... The framing is excellent and squarish format fitting well. Soft colors, great sense of depth and distance makes it a superb picture... i like also the low clouds in the BG..

Hi John
nice landscape. The shades give mystery. I like the brown tone and the nice frame.
Excellent week end
Bertrand

Hello John,
Amazing view taking from a great point.I like very much the tone of the colours,I find it very rare almost like a sepia!Great handle of light also adding so much to the atmosphere!
Greetings,
Thomas

Hi John. I had no idea that area had that climate classification. With the super delicate light this one has taken on a sepia b/w look. It feels so placid and quiet. I think it would help the composition however if the boat was a little closer. Very nicely done John.

Hi John
Good composition. Lovely morning light and interesting many layers.
Regards

Wow John, almost a sepia, this one! And I like it a lot....it's dramatic and has a nicely abstract quality. It's a feast of silhouetted shapes and reflections. I have some small doubts about the slightly OOF foreground, but this is a minor point, it doesn't disturb the viewing experience of this beautiful and mesmirizing shot. Thanx for the vital note too.
Have a nice sunday John,
Bert

Hi John,

Hi John,

A rough landscape with the rocks in foreground, perhaps make this little bit blur picture so attractive, the low sun care for the extra colour on the rocks, very well done!

Best regards,
John.

I like the brown tone of this picture very much. A great site to look at this wonderful place. Nice picture.

Hi John,
Gorgeous landscape with very good sharpness and depth. It pity the blur on the foreground rocks but i like it. Very well framed and done
Have a nice week

The quality of the light here takes me back to my visit to Vancouver Island back in '95, especially with that mist and haze over the water.
I'm not sure about the square crop, I think I'd have liked to have seen more of the seascape over to the left.
Even so, the composition is good, with the layering of rocks and islands giving a good sense of depth.
Good work John.

Cheers,
Ben

John,

Did you add that warm hue, or is it really just that pretty? And do you often see sea otters there? I would really like to see one in the wild, and I know they are pretty hard to find sometimes.

I am back on TE... looking forward to more shots.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Phantastic light. An excellent POV and a great note. What more can you want?

Hello John
The colour tones are simply superb...almost sepia. Love the layers you've got here with the FG rocks, the water, the small island & then the varied shades of landmass in the BG. Bathed in the warm summer light, this looks mystical. Simply wonderful!
