Having some fun experimenting with long exposures on the ocean shore. This was a 30 second exposure taken after sunset, with the result that the waves are turned into a kind of mist. I would have liked to get lower and closer, but this was as close as I could get without getting wet!

Taken at Dundarave Beach, in West Vancouver. Despite living in Vancouver for many years, this is the first time I had ever visited this place, and I was pleased to discover this great rocky beach, which looks great with some waves. I think I'll have to go back!

Hi Alvin
Very good experiment !
I like the colors and the atmosphere of this picture

Amazing picture.
DOF, color and lights are wonderful. I agree with about the lower POV, but I understand your problem.
TFS, Andrea

Hi Alvin,
many compliments for your attitude to experimentation. I knew that water in long exposure appears softer, but i didn't know that in some conditions it can become misty.
It seems a kind of magic vapor.
Well done
Matteo

Hi Alvin,
What a wonderful composition. The slow shutter speeds gives always outstanding results. Excellent light management and magnificent depth. Splendid work!

Regards John

Hi Alvin,

Great low light shot and the long exposure has paid off perfectly. living near the coast I know how great it is for shots like this. The portrait style suits the subject well.

Best regards,
Paul.

Very nice. I would also like to see a lower version.

Hello Alvin!
beautiful colours, light and efect in your composition!
Excellent done!
Lili

Hello Alvin,
Gorgeous photo of this moody ocean scene! I love the deep blues and the layers of round rocks. The slow shutter speed that you used makes the soft, velvety waves look like some dark magical mist encroaching on the rocky shore. Great photo!
Stan

Hi
Pretty sunset. The effect of 30s exposure - rocks bathing in the fog - is very successful.
Is there a lighthouse far away on the right?Quality is perfect.
Henryk

Hi Alvin,
Fascinating - your experiment with time exposure turned out perfectly - I guess until one tries these things one never knows the outcome. Good on you for demonstrating a very unique photographic technique with the high level of sophistication you bring to all your work. Great work and thanks for sharing. Gerald

Hey Alvin. Ok now that's just showing off! ;) I'm just jealous because this one turned out so awesome. Is the ND filter you used a regular filter or is it just on half the scene? The 30 second exposure gave you an incredible feel. This is a super-duper fantastic shot Alvin!!

Hi Alvin;

Sorry for my sporadic activity here on TrekEarth. Busy Busy- you know me... haha.

Well first of all- lets start with the horizon; perfectly level as is one of my biggest pet-peaves. An appealing composition- did you get your tripod wet with this one? I've never heard of Dundarave Beach- but will have to check it out- one of these trips back to Canada.

Well done Alvin, keep up the great work!
- Dan

Hi Alvin,

I see that you work with tripod, you can certainly F18 use for more depth sharpness, but picture is very nice, you chose for a vertical format and a excellent composition, the blue colour tints are very lovely!

Have a nice day,
John.

Hi Alvin,
Fantastic work with the long exposure, the effect that creates in the surface of the sea is very nice, gives a silky texture that looks like a mist.
And the rocks have a fort graphism, what combined with the beautiful sky and the pink tones of the sunset it forms a great composition.
Great shot!
Best regards,
Josep

Looks like a seething volcanoe! - nice exposure and POV - very nice indeed :)

HI Alvin,
What a great shot. Wonderful composition, nice eyepleasing colour and great atmosphere .

Hello Alvin,

Probably the best picture I,ve seen todasy in TE. Colors are extraordinary, and the long exposure has realized an incredible dream like atmosphere we see somnetimes in these fantastic new movies taken in China for instance.

Greetings from New York

Hi Alvin
Another nice one for the luminous darkness series, thos rocks emerging from the water make me think of a sci fi scene, like a creatures incubation room, I think there was a similar one in one of the "Alien" movies
Have a nice day JY

Beautiful composition, Alvin.. I love the clouds directly above the large rock too. Regards, Doug

Great mood and well composed Alvin, great vertical presentation...it rocks !! Good work !

Ha, I almost didn't notice the lighthouse way back there. It's like a little surprise for those who look long enough. I love the effect of the long exposure. The composition is wonderful, as is the exposure.
I love it.
Regards,
Ryan

Hi ALvin, wow! out of the world the place and the result!
great blue tone and wonderful ocmposition!
i love it!
ciao!
Valeria

Alvin
i love this one, this is the perfect sea landscape, an interesting bacground , with great colors, the hard edge looks th be very good.
well done to be this is perfect.
cheers
greg

Hi Alvin,
What a picturesque and particular impression. Gorgeous spectacle. Beautiful colours and fascinating details. Fabled work. Have a nice week. Thank you,
George

This one reminds me a recent photography from Frans Lanting in his "Life, A journey Through Time ". Of course he had unclouded sky and didn't had the lighthouse.
This is the best compliment I can make, comparing you to a leading professional photographer...
As for the rest I can say I like the leading seashore, the evening blue cast, the "misty" water, etc, etc, etc...another hit man!

PS: Where did you put that hard edge ND?

Hi Alvin
This time you've got lots of rocks in foreground. Just right for a landscape shot aren't they ;-)
In any case they work really well with the long exposure creating a lovely effect. The tiny beam of the light house adds depth in drawing the eye to the back. Lovely blue tones on the water too.
Regards
Nikki

Hi Alvin,
Fantastic atmosphere you got with that long exposure !
I want to try it by myself ! That's why I like TE, to decover new ideas :)
