Have you ever noticed numerous ants on peonies buttons? They drink a sugared liquid that lies there. Our grand-mothers used to say that their drinking was necessary to help the poeonies open, but I've read recently that it's not. Still, you'd better leave them there, as they're predator to other insects that you don't want near your peonies :)
Here's a trick to bring some of those beautiful peonies inside the house without ants sticked everywhere between the petals: bring them in just before the opening! Ants are easy to brush away at that time.
