As we approach the Winter Solstice it gets easier and easier to get up for the pre-dawn moments ;)

Today I rose to take more pre-dawn shots. The earlier ones were OK, but nothing spectacular
< We can only shoot what Nature offers ! > Then at a few minutes to 8AM the sky suddenly lit up.
Here is one of the shots with an almost perpendicular flare! Thanx to feedback
I can add that this phenomenon is best called a "sun pillar".

Little did I know that I would find an excellent description in my own "backyard",
with a photo from Sutherlands Lake, NS. Here is more information on same.


Being from out West I do know what sundogs aka. parhelia are;
and this was not that phenomenon, here are details abt. sundogs.


NOTE: No adjustments other than scale & crop. Colours are as shot.

NOTE: Winter Solstice 2006 - 22nd December
The midwinter sunset can be seen between Stonehenge's uprights - the largest trilithon.
English Heritage usually allows Open Access to Stonehenge during the Winter solstice sunrise -
... I will have to make due with the Atlantic View from Sambro Head,
which - when conditions are right - is second to none. What?
