"...A Free All-Night Contemporary Art Thing..."
A vignette from Fujiko Nakaya's fog sculpture, titled Fog in Toronto #71624, one of many interactive "artworks" featured at Toronto's inaugural Nuit Blanche festival.
It just struck me as ironic that this person (and many others) chose to use an umbrella to shield herself from the rain whilst walking through what was essentially a cloud of tiny rain drops. You can never be too cautious?
You WILL want to see Homerhomer's and RandomCameraGuy's interpretations of the same scene.

wouldn't expect anything less from you but an interesting take on the subject, not disappointed at all. Yellow tape gives quite a punch and gives a nice visual triangle. Contrast between the tape and the whole scenery is spectacular, also like the umbrella lady and the crowd looking down, as if someone wasn't cautious and is down there somwhere...
Guess you did a whole lot of burning, fine job Mike.

Very interesting composition, colours and contrast. The mood is really of miserable weather, cold and wet. Well done.

Wow !!! Mike this is the best shot from Fujiko Nakaya exposition.Nice perspective and light, the umbrella is excellent in this position. Many regards, Rafael

actually you took your shot waay before this one. this was shot just before we walked on to the path into the fog.
I liked this shot from when I saw it on your lcd. great thick blacks!

Ah this trio of Nuit Blanche I had to comment on before I sleep tonight...pure mood, this one, stylish and elegant with the yellow band of caution, what lies behind...dark shadows, shadowy woman, unapproachable...the wide is perfectly tilted. Fantastic!!

Like Alex's shot I love the way this is mysterious and lets the viewer create their own possible scenario. It could have easily fitted in with your series of the fire brigade. The yellow against the black looks good as well.

This looks really good. Yours is the best of the three ;-) Perfect timing, perfect composition, and perfect PP. I like it a lot.

A good picture tells a story. This one does. Could be a poster for promtion of a movie.
Nice composed, good colours. I like the second and thin yellow string as connection between the caution-message and the people.
Good job. TFS.

Wonderful title and equally wonderful composition. The yellow "caution" is giving a graphical mood and the silhouette of the woman behind that makes her unreachable. Wonderful idea, like telling a story through the pic.
ALSOM (6616) 2006-10-03 4:14
Damn this is good ! The silhouette out of the smoky & lit area is perfectly captured giving us the wonderfull ambience. The yellow tape is pretty well designed. "Caution" this photo is a masterpierce ;o)

This is out of this world, Mike, no question. The shadow play in the top right corner pocket, that YELLOW belt of CAUTION bisecting the frame, the rich purplish red color going from dark to light.
Absolutely first rate. Bravo!

I think your handling of the light is superb. The bright caution tape in the foreground does play off the umbrella held to sheild from the wetness of art. Also, the diagonal lines of the tape set up nice a geometric shape to add interest to the foreground.

Clever and superbe compo..Bravo

Excellent graphic shot. I like the angles and bright colours of the caution ribbons and the mysterious light on the people. The umbrella definitely renders the image more dynamic.

Are you taking this yellow ribbon, tucked in your photobag with your other props, wherever you go, or what?
This is the second time I see it and, guess what, at the same place in your frame... succesfully, anyway.
I already knew the umbrella trick in photo ;)... carried and shots loads in Burma and VN.. but coupled with the yellow tape, it's a real winner!
Add on top of that a can of orangy smoke, and you can make your own photo any time of day and night.
Ok, I see it now, lemme guess : this was taken in Peter's room and Alex is the shape holding the umbrella.

Superb, Mike... my hat off to you!
Your work is strong and this in particular is tremendously so... the contrasts, the yellow lines, the umbrella behind... just so cool and graphic... I would say extraordinary both in composition and tonal range...

Porteplume (3393) 2006-10-15 15:28
When such brilliant work is shown, how could I add some comment?
It's reaaaaaaly something! It's strong and so intelligently composed... Congratulations!

if the yellow ribbon in the foreground would have been more underexposed, i would have said that this is one of the best images i have ever laid my eyes on. Maybe you'd do that in a ws.

I thought that this event was exclusively french!!!
The mood is really good..i really like the silouette that appears in the light..
The signs in the foreground gives a good perspective.

This is just awesome. Its in my favorites now Mike. The yelow tape is great on two levels. One, the way it sets the mood of danger. Two, the way it looks, so strong yellow againstt he darker red. The red too is a color of danger, and I would be tempeted to like it even without the person, but the person (umbrella is a HUGE bonus) just ties the whole compo up for me.
Elaine_Blath (8509) 2006-12-13 2:14
perfect play with light and details, I love this compo, such a strange atmosphere in this shot...well seen and very well captured!
Take care, Ivana
