This is an overview of Lake O'Hara, with the mountains ringing the lake and the Lake O'Hara Lodge visible by the lakeshore. The lodge is a luxury hotel, with feather beds, gourmet meals and a spectacular view. It is also spectacularly expensive, with those cabins going for over $600 per night. My previous post showed some more modestly priced accomodation, the Elizabeth Parker Hut, run by the Alpine Club of Canada, with dormitory style rooms. There is also a campground that only costs $6 per night (if you can get in!).
The elevation of the lake is about 1,800 meters, placing it in the trees just a little short of the alpine territory, but you are very close to the alpine, and hiking up only 200 meters puts you into a different climate. One attraction of Lake O'Hara is that the trails are short and they have views all the way from the beginning, instead of being stuck down in heavy forest as in many other places.

Well Alvin I think this photo is simply superb. The lighting is wonderful on the lake and background mountian. Excellent composition and I am now wondering if you can help me make reservations for next summer. If I win the lottery I would buy these cabins at the drop of a hat! Thanks for sharing!

Another superb photo from your day at Lake O'Hara Alvin. The lighting here is wonderful and the composition is very, very good. You have exposed this perfectly considering the difficult shadows. Very nice indeed.

This place is ABSOLUTELY stunning. I couldn't resist- I had to check out the lodge. The closest road is 12km away- wow, now that is issolation. Whats the closest town Alvin?
Your photo has done it justice. Great levels- the polariser really helps to give you definition.
I'd love to spend a day or two up here..

My goodness, those must have been the best 24 hours one can have at Lake O'Hara! This photo is absolutely stunning...I love the view and this one stands apart because of the amazing light and shadow play. Great composition and fantastic quality. This is a masterpiece, Alvin...I love it!

Hi Alvin. I guess this shot is OK if you’re into stunning and awesome pictures. Lucky you and the rest of us we are, lol! I think this is going to do very well for you. Congrats Alvin!
blakitan (1311) 2006-08-28 22:51
Very beautiful view of a lake, with lodges and pine trees, scenic mountain, and blue sky decorated with white clouds. What more can I say? I guess I just make it a short and simple comments:"Perfect"
pboehringer (770) 2006-08-29 0:01
Very good light managing and balance of the dark foreground agains the almost overexposed mountains and clouds, Alvin. The composition gives for some reason a radiance with the center being exactly in the middle of the huts.

Beautiful photo of this splendid landscape, Alvin!Very nice colours

Très belle lumière sur ce décor canadien ! Elle crée beaucoup de zones de contrastes, les 4 chalets en bois ponctuent la composition, les couleurs sont très chouettes.
Angelillo (9374) 2006-08-29 3:17
Definitely this is an extraordinary beauty, and you are a master to capture it. The wide-angle let you an scenery complex (many elements), well ordered and very balanced. I like a lot the big space open facing us, that give a very big depth. It's marvellous. TFS. Regards,

There's an old French (or possibly even Quebecois) song that says "Ma cabane au Canada..." and viewing this photo it came to my mind at once, you took this one just at the right moment to have the light on the huts and surrounding trees, lightening part of the lake as well to show reflection and this magic water color. The overlooking background mountains complete well this nice view.
Have a nice day,

Beautiful place, wonderful landscape. Excellent shot. Super colors and sharpness. Congratulations.
prezntime (3946) 2006-08-29 6:28
What a wonder to spend time at a place such as this. The cabins seem so inviting (even if they keep most travelers at arms length). Your POV is excellent giving a nice arc to the line of the cabins. This arc contrasts the somewhat inward arc created by the mountains. Beautiful colors and well done.
dkeus31 (27735) 2006-08-29 8:09
A very good light illuminating the houses and also the superb scenery.
ChrisJ (114799) 2006-08-29 8:28
A fantastic shot of the Canadian Rockies, with superb color, sharpness, & lighting Tfs!
nicole80 (2163) 2006-08-29 8:46
Very nice composition and good DOF. I like all the colours we can find in this shot, the blue of the sky, and the green of the lake are well seen ! I like the reflections of the chalets in the lake.
A typical view of Canadians Rockies that I like very much !
nwoehnl (122) 2006-08-29 10:22
Very nice one, Alvin, it looks like it should be an official promotion shot for the lodge. Its scenic value is illustrated at the very best, and the wooden huts make a colorfully contrasting interest versus the natural splendor around. Fine framing including the foreground stones and a lovely scenic backdrop provided by the range. Good use of the polarizer, too. The reflections on the clear water amplify everything at the most favorable. Great shot.
wilkinsonsg (8662) 2006-08-29 12:07
Very well taken, sharp and with well handled lighting - TFS :)

Fantástica essa foto Alvin.
Composição e cores maravilhosas. O céu se destaca entre as montanhas e água calma reflete sutilmente as "pequenas" casas.
Foto de excelente qualidade. Parabéns!

What a wonderful landscape you captured here.
The colours are superb.
And I really like the shadows of the clouds on the mountains.
pablominto (53746) 2006-08-30 3:39
I don't know if that is what you actually did, but it seems like a wise move to wait for the lighting to be exactly like this!
A wonderful composition, superb colours and fine details...
A beautiful place in a well composed postcard!
:-) later! OK
carper (96) 2006-08-30 6:43
well Alvin I like the shot.
the light is very nice and the point of view is good, it give's perspective. I think a frame for a better presentation is not a bad idea by this very good shot, well done.
cherryripe (21033) 2006-08-30 6:48
With so many mountains around, I guess you have to be lucky to have the sun as you did, right on those cute cabins. They look small for the price. The trees look so perfect. I like the colour of the lake.
dcawker (5717) 2006-08-30 9:43
Just amazing! There's that great light again too!! Regards, Doug P.S. I hope that you checked out that HDR program site.. :)

agbonavita (0) 2006-08-30 20:50
The Canada's valley are beautiful. This moutains with the top covered by snow and the blue sky are so pretty.
I like the houses between the trees. I'm thinking about wake up in the cold morning and look by the window this pretty lake and the moutains,
teutza (10590) 2006-08-31 4:45
what an amasing combination of colors and reflecions!!
capthaddock (28790) 2006-08-31 9:49
Hi Alvin - outstanding scenery as usual, this time I like the inclusion of the cabins, the demand is understandable enough, but $600 seems too excessive, imagine paying that much getting rained in, anyway incredible variety of blues and greens in the lake
john_c (24666) 2006-08-31 10:47
Spectacular without being trite...The foreground rocks and the four cabins set snugly in the woods make this shot sizzle, with the special hue of glacial water shimmering without dominating the scene. You got the best deal of all in that you captured the cabins without paying for the night...The idyllic sky enhances here with the puffy clouds. Well done.
donluicu (24724) 2006-08-31 15:33
that day in Lake O'hara was a great TE day!!

Wow! Stunning beauty Alvin, ever time I see images like this I ask myself why am I still holidaying each year in the mediterranean. The national parks of Canada have their own unique beauty. Before this unspoiled wilderness disappears I must see these places for myself. I love your exposure and clean composition. Its fascinating to know this lake is at such an altitude. Very good work.
napdsp (744) 2006-09-01 5:38
It looks so nice and wide open with a wide angle lens. The colors are so vivid and amazing. Wonderful detail. TFS.

Superbe paysage, une très belle région. Mais en plus une excellente lumière qui met en évidence ces petites cabanes projetant leur reflet dans l'eau
timleahy (2195) 2006-09-05 19:06
This shot is a beauty! The background of big mountains and big sky are magnificent. Seems like only Canada has dramatic scenery like this in such abundance.
mbasil (2129) 2006-09-05 20:53
Stellar, Alvin. Great job with the WA. I can hardly believe it is only 16mm it is so rich in details. Great job with the exposure, and nice job with the naturally rich colors.
clic (17129) 2006-09-08 18:45
The burst of light you waited for adds magic to the "sweet spot" including trees and chalets, enhancing the overall beauty of this scene!
