Photographer’s Note

At the beginning of the 1910's, the government of Canada acquires from the Grey Nuns the development site to erect its new customs building. Building work is carried out under the direction of the Public Works Ministry, but architects E.L. Horwood and Alfred Hector Lapierre are also associated to the project. Between 1934 and 1936, important extention works are undertaken. Architects Thomas Hall and Dalbé Viau are responsible for work and make sure that the new section of the building is perfectly harmonized with the initial section. The building still belongs to the federal government which uses it as office building.
This colossal building has an imposing 4 floors high ionic colonnade which rests on a solid sub-foundation.
