Photographer’s Note

On a late September afternoon, folks at the boat concession below Moraine Lake Lodge are closing the stand for the day, and pulling the last boats from the water onto the pier. A couple of hours earlier it would have been possible to rent a canoe for 25 Canadian Dollars per hour.

Moraine Lake, nestled in the Valley of the Ten Peaks among the towering mountains of the Canadian Rockies' main ranges, has provided inspiration for millions of visitors from around the world since Walter Wilcox became the first white man to reach its shore in 1899. If I had to pick a single favorite place of mine in the Canadian Rockies, this one would probably be it.
