Photographer’s Note

This picture has been taken on the Athabasca Glacier, a tongue of the Columbia Icefield, from the Snowcoach that was bringing us back and show the ice road build on the glacier.

You can also see well on this picture the stripes on the glacier showing the movement of the glacier.

ADVISE:

Please do not spend near hundred of dollars (for a family of 4) to get into those Snowcoach Tour unless it is a clear blue sky. This do not worth the price at all especially because of the fact that you do have only 10-15 minutes on the top of the Glacier.

You better talk a healthly walk by yourself on the glacier starting at the beginning of it, it worth more as a personnal experience.

I had the chance to go there 3 times, in 1984, in 1997 and in 2004. Definitely my best experience was in 1984 while there was not as many ruling around the Glacier and unconsciously decided to walk it all from the beginning. The glacier at that time was not in a smooth angle and you could not really start to walk into it, you had to climb it first. We were only in running shoes and shorts... we did not know it was dangerous but there is true stories of people that have died there doing what we did back in 1984, and some people still try to go further than the delimited cones. So please respect the signalization!!!

With global warming the glacier is moving back really quickly, it is almost a kilometer further back than it was standing 20 years ago...
