Danger Beaver at Work
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Just outside Exshaw at Lac Des Arcs is a small nature reserve. It is difficult to find as the information signs aren't actually at the reserve, and even more awkward to park at as the parking area is unmarked!
Our reason to visit was that we had been advised that it is a good place to see Bald Eagles. Unfortunately none there on the day we visited and all the waterfowl was just commonplace stuff. We did come across a lot of evidence of beaver activity though. The lake is directly in front of us here and can just about be made out through the undergrowth. I had to climb over one tree that had fallen the wrong way to take this photo. The one that has been almost chewed through will almost certainly fall into the lake. Behind that tree is also visible another that has again fallen the wrong way.
On the evidence of this picture it seems that getting the tree to fall in the right direction is as much luck as judgement on the part of the beavers. It does however also show how much work the beavers put in to get their results. The stump in the foreground must be at least 18" across.
I did consider cropping in on the left but wanted to show the stump and tree fully in the environment. |

Very interesting your note. I wonder who learnt to cut trees in the chosen direction, the man or the beaver? Extraordinary the cutting of these big trees! I like your photo but it is a little bit vague in strategic places but it is beautiful all the same.
intriguing conclusions........never thought of it!
Hi Keith, best for 2004, this is a good PJ type /cum nature pic, depicting the work of those industrious dam builders. Good you did not crop.
Interesting nature shot. It's really impressive what those small guys can do!
Good details. Only think it's a bit too sharp. A softer image would help seing the details better. Good note too.
