Photographer’s Note
This is the fourth installment in my Carnival series. All photos were taken at the 2005 Canadian National Exhibition, an annual fair commonly known as the CNE.
This ride is the Polar express. Tongapup, who has documented the CNE in 2004 and 2005, has a photo, The Seven Deadly Sins, with the ride's excellent signage front and centre.
I love the sheer glee on these kids faces!
How does it work? You sit in a small car that holds three people. All the cars are connected together, like a train. The train then moves backward at ever increasing speed as loud music blasts and the operator asks repeatedly whether the riders want to go faster. He takes the riders' screams for an affirmative answer and cranks up the speed. This happens over and over until it becomes truly frightening/exhilerating/sick-making (depending on your individual inclinations and tolerances).
As the ride goes faster and faster, eveyone is pulled to their left (the right side of the photo) by centrifugal force, and the person in the seat closest to the outside is often more than a little crushed by the weight of his or her fellow riders (there's a warning about this that's partially visible in the workshop).
No fancy links or philosophizing today, just the sheer adrenaline of the Polar Express. The photo was taken while I was on the ride, by the way, not observing it from safe, solid ground. It only seemed right. I had to twist around and take pictures of the people behind me since I couldn't see the faces of those in front of me.
For a look at the aftermath of this adrenaline rush, see the workshop.

Hi Lee,
I like it and your note.
It is pure joy.
I totally love the "biggest one sits on the left" of the WS. That story is adding so much to the main photo.
And I want to set up a club of TE members that do blurred pictures. I will post a few of China and Vietnam soon...

I love this one Lee... Not to much time to give explanations now, but I want to tell you. Take care.

What a fun photo- you really can feel the motion. The boys hands up in the air make a great focus point- the brave one who let go of the bar!- good for him. My favorite part of the whole thing is how the frame blends in with the white sky. I don't know why I like it- I just do :). Great work!

Terrific shot! You caught all the actions and expressions. I know because I rode similar turning, sliding and twisting rollercoasters before including the dad drop from a tower. Beautiful composition and point of view.

Hello Lee, long time, no see ;-) Oops, at first I didn't even realise that it rhymes. Checked your gallery but you wre back for a while already while I was too busy.
I love this one, there's so much dynamism in it, and so much joy. You chose well to be a part of it, I wouldn't mind being in it, too. The one in the white T-shirt is a dare devil!
I have been on the CNE in '76, but I remember no carnival, just flowers and a park or something like that. It was my first visit to Canada.

Hello Lee,
Just a great shot, bursting with dynamism and joyful terror. I like how the overexposed edges provide a natural frame of high pitches "noise", so to speak.
Quite brilliant!
Cheers,
Francis

Interesting shot. I like the blur and the look of the kids faces. Great shot and intersting idea for a picture. Thanks.
