Canada's most fertile land is in the area around Metropolitan Toronto. Canada's most rapidly expanding neighbourhoods are in the areas around Metropolitan Toronto.
Who do you think wins out in this battle?
This photo was taken at midday during a wander around my parents home in late summer when corn fields are lush... well at least in some places...
I took the original and selected the ear of corn in the foreground (which, I admit, I artifically propped up for the pic) and copied to a new layer. I then increased the contrast of the background with curves, I also increased brightness and reduced saturation by a third. I then merged the file and made a copy which I then blurred heavily and reduced opacity to 50%. Finally I feathered the edges and added a white border.
So does it work?

I really like this composition. (and the fact that you admitted to propping up the corn! lol) This photo has a very old vs new look to it. Very effective. But I think I have to agree with Bullybeef53. I think the blur is a little too much (just a bit too soft for such a strong subject).
All in all, I like the photo!

I'm OK with the amount of the blur, thanks for the note, and also the Photoshop lesson, which I will try out.

Yes, it works. Have you tried writing an article about the encroahment of the suburban sprawl to go with it? Might find a local magazine to take it... :-).

Thanks for the link this this pic. The same thing is happening around where I live. The city is growing 'into' our farmlands. I like the way your composition conveys that message. And yes, I find this much more attractive than just a plain old corn like mine.
Great work on the post processing, especially the washed-out look. Nice.
