Shades of Blue, a photo from Alberta, Prairies

Photographer's Note

This is Morraine Lake, in Banff National Park. This is one of the best known scenes in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, but it never fails to amaze me when I visit. The valley is known as the Valley of Ten Peaks, although only 6 peaks are visible in the picture. The mountains are very steep and dramatic, and come right down to the lake. Since the lake is on the north side of the mountains, the sun is behind the peaks for most of the day - this photo was taken about 9 in the morning. The lake has an incredible light blue colour, which can be seen where the sun is hitting the water. The colour is caused by rock dust in the water, and the rock dust comes from the glaciers above. For this shot I used a polarizing filter, which really made the sky stand out.

Very nice, strong colors in a great light. The air is rarely this crisp here. I would try to reprocess this image, because the sharpness is poor and there are obvious jpeg artifacts at the rock/sky interface. Something wasn’t quite right, maybe sharpening or just downsizing, and the landscape deserves more.

Absolutely beautiful. The colors and the sharpness seem perfect to me. I figured you used the polarizer, I have been using one quite often myself and they are a necessity. Buy I Still don't think the polarizer does any justice for the real beauty of actually being there. Great work.

The greatness of the mountains gives a very special light and shadows on this beautiful lake. It improves contrast of the overall picture. Alvin I see that when you came by this well photographed site that you timed your sho well. By that I mean the lighting in this late afternoon really brings our alot of color and deep tones in the shadows. The mountain shadow on the lake is superb. You should move to Chilliwack and hike with me up many a hiking trails up steep trails where the air is clean and mind is awestruck by all Gods wonderful beauty.
But I admit I have been eyeing your gallery in the past. You only post oncve in a while and when you have a winning shot. This one is one of your very best. Take Care Alvin.

Great photo! Colors are amazing, polarizing filter was excellent choice, as well as the angle of sunrays used for the polarizer (some say that 30 degrees to 90 are perfect choice for this filter).

The awe you feel standing in front of this lovely, powerful scene, is very well captured for the viewer. After posting my sad mountain scene, I opened up this one of yours! Oh my the photographic skill I aspire to, I'm so impressed.
You've captured the grandure so well, and the contrast between the blue of the sky and the green of the water is amazing, powerful and dramatic. The mountains themselves leave me breathless, quite an accomplishment from a photo! The triangular shapes formed with the light and shadows are very nice as is the velvety water. I'd like to see it just a tiny bit sharper, like 1%, but then I seem to oversharpen everything, maybe it's my monitor?
Another masterpiece! Bravo!

I love this scene. Mountain scenery like this can't go wrong. You were wise to use polarization and the sunlight of morning like that. Glad you didn't capture canoes or anything else, this is all it needs! I once saw Lake Louise like this, only with neon green water. Wow! If you were to digitally transform this into an oil painting it would make the perfect 8 X 8 foot wall mural, believe me.

Je vais faire plus ou moins le même commentaire que tu as fait de ma dernière photo, un endroit que l'on voit souvent sur TE, mais c'est probablement cette photo qui le présente sous les plus belles lumières et les plus séduisantes couleurs.
Le cadrage et le POV sans impeccables.
J'adore ces bleus intenses, mais aussi l'intacte blancheur de la neige.

Hi Alvin. Blues in nature are what draws my eye more than anything else. Here you cave captured natural scenery second to none in what is a fairly remote are. The composition is good with the lake and mountains. Details of the far cliffs is very clear. TFS.Murray.

Wow! I can see why this is a featured photo. You captured absolutely beautiful colors and sharpness of the trees and mountains.There appears to be some sort of run off between the mountains, maybe the rock dust you were talking about. Thanks for your lovely presentation.
