Photographer’s Note

This photo is a sequel to my first Pharmacist photo found here, and goes out to Andre Bonavita. While the other portrait was a soothing one that put the mind at ease, this one obviously is not.

For me this picture captures the feeling one has as a child going to see the doctor or some other medical professional: you visit a mysterious, intriguiging, but frightening world. You don't understand what's going on or what's being done to you, much like a pet being taken to the veterinarian. And the doctor has such an air of authority that he or she can be very imposing. Obviously the low angle also recalls a child's point of view.

(I should mention, to be fair, that in real life this guy is a perfectly nice, friendly pharmacist in a tiny, slightly dusty, Greek pharmacy a little ways from my apartment. I just happened to catch him at an odd angle and while he was perhaps in thought, resulting in a serious expression.)

This photo also continues the theme (if two pictures can constitute a theme) of surveillance, started in the image "Control"

Tech: I did very little post-processing on this one. I cropped it, turned up the blue slightly for the sake of the security monitor and the red to give a touch of colour to the pharmacist's face, but mostly I wanted to retain the overall grey tone that made the image unsettling to me in the first place. The graininess is natural and while I considered trying to get rid of it, in the end I decided that it went well with the grey colouring to give an ominous feel to the picture.
