This picture, taken in the Crawford Lake Conservation Area near the town of Milton Ontario, shows one of the 'longhouses' reconstructed from the remains of an Iroquois village found on this site. Archeologists found the remains in 1973 while studying of a the sediments of a rare 24 m deep meromictic lake. In a meromictic lake waters do not mix and therefore its sediments contains information about natural and cultural history of the area. They determined that around 1434-59 in five longhouses about 250 people lived and practiced agriculture at this site.
I put a picture into the Workshop of a display in the information building on the site. It shows how the people lived in these longhouses with artifacts and a painting enlarged to life size. The painting is entitled "The Spirit of Wolf Clan" by Ivan Kocsis (1933-2008), a highly regarded expert of the artistic reconstructions of aboriginal life in Ontario.
