This is a picture taken from a slide I took in 1972 and recently scanned.
We were leaving the great lakes for Rotterdam. They shut the locks at Montreal on December 12th to prevent ships pushing ice in to the locks and damaging the mechanism. If you are not through the locks by then you are stuck in the lakes for the winter. The river ices over and they have to use an ice breaker to clear a way for the ships in the river.
A really beautiful trip down the river on a nice day like this.
