Photographer’s Note

The Old Britannia Schoolhouse, was built as a common school in 1852 at a cost of £110. It replaced an earlier wooden school building which had fallen into poor repair.
In 1871 the common schools became public schools, fees for public schools were abolished and attendance at them became compulsory rather than voluntary (for children of 7 to 12 years of age for at least 4 months of the year).
In 1959, after having been attended by several generations of children and witness to many changes, the schoolhouse was closed.
In 1982 the Britannia Schoolhouse was restored to the approximate time period of the 1920's or the 1930's. This "over-a-century" old schoolhouse is now operated on a daily basis. Elementary and secondary classes visit for a day and participate in lessons of "long ago" taught by the schoolmaster or schoolmistress. In this way students receive a "living history" lesson to enrich their regular classroom studies.
This capture of the old schoolhouse in autumn scenery I took in the early morning hours.
