Photographer’s Note
The shores of Campbell River on Vancouver Island are stacked with logs washed in from the sea - you can also find these beautiful nature carved shapes, smooth and sensuous - and for me so full of a life and energy to transform into fantastic beasts - indeed the local authorities have recognised the creative potential in all this free wood and run a highly popular sculptural competition the results of which adorn parts of the town.
For me the simplicity of this stone wound about in wood had a very deep appeal. As with the First Nations people of this area I have always had a 'learning relationship' with stones - every since I was a young kid combing the beaches of the Severn Estuary or the Solent in Hampshire.....I picked up those that 'spoke to me' and in so many unexpected ways have learnt much from having them around.
There is so much to be learnt from the world in small details.....and they are such an important part of the photographer's armoury in really conveying an atmosphere, a more comprehensive sense of place and the distinctiveness of different localities.

I like it a lot Kev. Depending on how I look at it I see different things... The light is lovely and brings out the textures. These pieces of wood and the stoes have a life of their own I think. They are full of energies. We share a common passion there : from little on I have collected them and seashells too. I must have over a hundred kgs at home...my best catch a 17,5 kg granite almost round stone, taken in Corsica, more than one hour work to dig it out from among other ones. And then the very tiny ones, so smooth...Thank you also for sharing your thoughts on this, most refreshing and...well, you know.
Have a most relaxing and happy weekend.
Michèle
