This is another photo taken from the very top of the Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver.
I'm approx 300 feet above the ground, looking downward onto the Port of Vancouver. I love this area as it has 3 fantastic photo subjects...the downtown eastside for its architecture, the Port with its Cranes and boats, and the Railway lines with trains and cars.
Its early morning here, about an hour after sunrise with the light beaming in.
Enjoy the weekend everyone.

My brother would love this, too. He's a trainaholic; the name explains itself!
Love the diagonal pattern created by the repeating lines of trains and stock.
The lovely long shadows reveal the earliness of the hour. You have a fine 'eye' for line and composition which is so evident from the thumbnail.
Have a good day,

I like here the pattern and graphism created by those different trains.
Good idea to put the scene diagonally in the layout and the soft early morning ligth creates nice shadows which again gives a 3D effect to the viewer's eye !
TFS and have a nice weekend

Using a great diagonal perspective together with a lovely soft side lighting you've produced a very memorable shot. I liked the diverse geometrical patterns of the railways and wagons. They almost look like miniature models. Very well seen and performed. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes,

No more buildings? I like the diagonals of the picture and the different colors of the rolling stock. it seems at the back that an accident is going to occur!

brianmcc (5786) 2012-02-03 12:31
you got yourself into a great view point for this one. the diagonal lines are superb, and the rows of trains look like a child's dream model railway. great colours, the light makes all the difference here.
dkmurphys (42483) 2012-02-03 12:57
Who doesn't? Trains are always fascinating. Wonderful capture, a fine panoramic detail.
Have a great weekend.

I bet you had a toy train set when you were a boy - or if you didn't, I bet you wished that you had.
This is boys' toys stuff with fabulous composition, the rails and trains making a strong diagonal across the frame and with the light coming at right angles to that and providing some beautiful illumination and shadows. Perfect exposure, lovely colours and, as always, exquisite sharpness.

A nice golden side light on these diagonals of trains on their tracks
Colorful and luminous scenery, with obvious visual and graphic impact
have a nice WE

patdeph (35742) 2012-02-04 2:18
you have used in the best way the lines of the rails and the colorful containers to create a splendid and dynamic graphism, and you have chosen the superb morning light to enhance it.Excellent!
MJR (3340) 2012-02-04 3:34
I like trains ! I mean as photography subjects.
The beautiful parallel lines here, with differing trains and stock make a really strong image. The light and shadow, the colours and shapes, all work really well together.
It would, as my dear Mother used to say, 'make a wonderful embroidery'. And that was high praise indeed !
gildasjan (39558) 2012-02-04 3:44
Une très bonne composition dans la diagonale du format.J'aime beaucoup le milieu ferroviaire et ici la lumière est belle.Un bel accord de couleurs chaudes avec ce container bleu à l'arrière plan.

now that is what you call a train set! Always wanted one when I was a kid, but alas never did get one :-( This is a great shot with wonderful diagonal lines (pun!) and a beautiful light that casts superb long shadows and brings out all the detail so perfectly. Excellent imagery!
Enjoy the weekend - Brian.

Wow, the POV is really perfect! Love the beaming of the light towards the train as it gives a nice subtle illumination and shadows upon them! The understated effect of HDR is beautifully applied, giving nice details on this creative and remarkable graphism! Composition and framework at its best! Compliments!

I love the railroad motives ... good photo...Greetings!!

You made a great graphical shot from these trains. The diagonal lines add dynamism. Nice light too.
delpeoples (48592) 2012-02-04 16:58
Hi dear Craig
Definitely a shot for the boys. Re-living our childhood today, by any chance? The HDR works well on this shot. But for me the most attractive elements are the repeating diagonal lines, colours and textures. Nice work, and from reading your discussion with John, I'm amazed that you've not travelled much on trains. We'll have to rectify that when you come to Australia ;)
Cheers, don't work too hard
ChrisJ (91276) 2012-02-05 0:47
Love the high pov, repetition of the tracks & rolling stock / carriages, & the angled composition using diagonals. Good color & sharpness. The sidelighting early morning is excellent here. Tfs!
Bartleby (13238) 2012-02-05 9:38
it definitely looks like a good spot for pictures! Love what you did here with the diagonals and the golden light. I think this could well lend itself to a tilt-shift processing....
LOOOK13 (19046) 2012-02-06 9:13
A very very good idea , with a spectacular result;
holmertz (31260) 2012-02-07 1:57
I understand your fascination with this view. These are great looking diagonal lines of trains and the early morning light casts opposing diagonal shadows across the tracks. The light at this time of the day is very attractive.
willperrett (4075) 2012-02-07 3:45
Dynamic diagonals are what make this picture as far as I'm concerned. This is almost abstract pattern rather than the photographic recording of a place, and all the better for it. Good work! Have you considered whether it may not be even stronger in B/W??
ruisc_pt (10133) 2012-02-07 4:45
Awesome diagonal lines @45º.
Great dynamic in the composition enhanced by the shadows.
vasilpro (40557) 2012-02-07 13:45
Wonderful composition from an excellent high POV, beautiful diagonal lines, lovely light and colors, very nice framework, TfS!

My favorite means of transportation were trains.
We do not have fast track, but I love these trips.
I really like the perspective and the visual parallel to the diagonal.
Excellent contrast between the different trains and other details with the track.
Fantastic feature of the morning sun gives amazing light tothe photography.
A perfect composition.
jplebrun (21208) 2012-02-23 14:46
très belle photo de ces trains qui attendent leur départ, j'aime aussi les trains
kwekwekan (680) 2012-06-05 17:52
Thinking back to my time in Vancouver and all the wonderful places to take a photo, I definitely wouldn't have thought to look at the train yard. Well spotted, especially from this great vantage point. Nice early morning light with deep shadows.
Have a great evening,
