Anvil Island and Howe Sound at sunset. Howe Sound is just north of Vancouver on the way to Squamish and Whistler. Although it's called Howe Sound, it's really a fiord, carved by glaciers in the last ice age, leaving steep mountains on each side of the water. I actually went to this place to get some shots of waves, because the previous night had a big windstorm, but as you can see, there were no waves at all (but it made for some nice reflections!).
I know a lot of people on TE look down their noses at sunsets, but when I see a scene that is so beautiful I can't resist.
Some technical details: I used a 2 stop graduated neutral density filter, but the contrast was just huge. In processing I did a "shadow/highlights" adjustment in Photoshop, and some work with curves.

Hi, Alvin -
Anyone who looks down his nose at a lovely sunset doesn't deserve to have one. (Nose, that is.) Especially one this well composed. You timed it well with the low tide showing the fg rocks, too.
cdmonson (5250) 2008-11-24 18:22
Beautiful sunset. I'd go one further on Dan's comment--anyone who looks down their nose at a sunset isn't dedicated enough to stay out for one. :) I really like the composition and the colors, but the mountain and the rocks seem very, very dark. Perhaps it was intentional, but I think the rocks in particular could have used a bit more detail. But otherwise, very lovely.

Hello Alvin. I have to agree that there are far too many sunsets posted on this site. But I will allow you to post because your sunsets show an excellent employment of light control. The scene is wonderful and thanks for sharing. I assume the shape of the island is supposed to look like an anvil but cannot see it yet. Nice work Alvin.

The light and orange tones are wonderful and you found an interesting foreground with the gravel. The water looks like melted metal.

Congratulations for the wonderful colors
The reflections are great

Add me to the sundowner camp too - though more for the reason of not making it out of the bed early enough for sunrises, which I think are even more beautiful.
On this specimen I like how the clouds look like on fire, and the pebbles in the foreground nicely balance the darker clouds on the upper right. Perfect as it has to be for a proper cheesy sunset ;-)

Great composition of clouds and nature. Is it polarized?
It creates a very dramatic sky. The blue and the sea are perfect.
Cheers from Hong Kong.

Good strong blacks against the sunset sky. The clouds balance the FG rocks nicely.

You'll never hear me complaining about sunset images - I think each is unique and beautiful in its own way. You've got a great one here with all the elements in perfect order. Love the colors. TFs. Gerald

Wonderful place, beautiful landscape. Superb colors, excellent effect. Good frame and colors. Well done.

This is far more than the usual "f/8 and being there" sunset image - at least for me. Yours has a context and depth that is missing from the status quo. The highlights have posterized a tad but not beyond believability. I like that glassy sheen on the water that makes it look almost metallic.

The reflection and the strong colors make this sunset very special. I'm with Dan here, not only do they not deserve a nose but they don't deserve to see another sunset; however, you clearly get a special dispensation; with Paul, 'allowing,' you to post. ;-)
Do you know if Lightroom works with the D700?
cherryripe (21033) 2008-11-25 12:09
I can't understand why some people don't like sunset photography - maybe they just don't see the beauty in it or the variety. The reflection and the pebbles are lovely here.

wonderful sky, perfect framing, good depth, lovely landscape-sunset photo

I love the colour, contrast and clarity of this wonderful image Alvin. The intense colour in the sky looks fantastic. Very nice work.

En regardant cette image j'ai crois que je vais craquerr pour le D 700, très bonne gestion de la lumière.
Are you happy with your D700 ?

Wonderful colours and reflections in this fine picture.
I like the silhouettes and the lovely clouds
TFS and have a nice day

I am one person who does not look my nose at sunsets. The glow behind the distant mountain created by the sunset exudes a surrealistic atmosphere. I like it very much. The light management could not be better. Your technical note is very useful. Thank you.

Hi Alvin, fantastic sunset with wonderful light and splendid colors, fascinating reflections, very well done, ciao Silvio

There is still some skill required in getting a truly outstanding sunset, & you've demonstrated that here. Timing is also critical & once again, a success story. Marvellous colour, sharpness, & graphism. Tfs!
josepmarin (58359) 2008-12-11 13:27
Your composition combines the silhouettes in cross-light of this wonderful landscape with the reflections in the water, under a weak light of the sunset and a few really attractive tones.
The technical execution is perfect.
A beautiful composition, my friend.
marietom (34609) 2008-12-24 1:40
Superbe paysage aux belles couleurs. Ce reflet est très beau, et ce ciel merveilleux.
pboehringer (770) 2009-01-22 12:47
despite the ND grad filter I can imagine of how much work you had to do at home to get close to what you saw with your eyes. The composition with the backlight is great stuff and your postprocessing is very convincing. It seems real with a good tonal range and vivid colors.
pierrefonds (71673) 2009-01-22 19:57
The reflections in the water are assets to the composition. The point of view leads our eyes toward the mountains in the background. The light of the sunset is giving nice colors to the sky and shadows to some area of the pcture. have a nice day.
