Heading out towards the Johnston Straight which is in between mainland BC and Vancouver Island was this striking black cloud. Thankfully it headed over to the mainland, and as they say every cloud has a silver lining because we saw four humpback whales shortly after.

Hi Jim. Now I’m jealous! Four humpback whales! Great photo. Well composed to emphasise that dramatic sky. Good handling of light also. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Jim

a threatening dark cloud indeed, and very well captured.

Hey Jim,

A nice picture of this ominous looking cloud. I like the low point of view, subtle colors and the contrasts between the black cloud, and those white ones in the background.

Best regards.

Hello Jim,
Where are the whales, please ;-)
Incredible mood you caught here... this black cloud over the sea is so dark that I hardly can see its silver lining!
The eye is directed to the horizon and these small part of blue sky, well done.
Have a nice day.
Best regards, Christian

Hey Jim, the most I've ever seen are two Humpbacks, I guess I need to start looking under storm clouds. Very nice and dramatic sky with great colour and excellent textures seen both in the sky and in that sea.

Thanks, John

Talk about moody! this is a menacing, dark and atmospheric shot all in one. Great work to capture the scene over the ocean....
Cheers

I like the colours & contrasts you are able to produce Jim, This is an excellent example of what I mean. Handled the light very well & an impressive looking angry sky. Only four hey.:-).
well done.
Take care.
Santo

I never seen a whale all my life not to say a humpback! The dramatic storm cloud is well captured, looks like hoovering just metres above the sea! I saw a similar post by another TE member earlier in B&W, you may try and see how it turns up.

Excellent shot

Alfred

Jim,
I never have seen a single whale, despite living in California for 6 years. They swim twice a year along the californian coast as part of their migration, but I never had the opportunity to go to the coast during this period. Next time when I go out there to look for whales I also will look out for clouds like these to have the luck to see at least 4 if not more whales.
Very nice composition with the cloud going in as a wedge and covering the foreground and the tip far away in the background.
Peter

Stunning composition Jim. I like the threatening sky with white cloud along the horizon with the mood of storm is coming. Well composed with good sea and sky separation. Best regards. Jusni

Hi Jim!

Spectacular, breathtaking view, a haunted atmosphere in this marvellous photo! Excellent framing and composition, great "dark" light managment that enhances the atmosphere! Congratulations!

Best regards,
Hercules

Hi Jim,
mmhhhh I don't see the whales right now, maybe I'll get another coffee first ;-)
What steals the show is indeed the big cloud, showing strong dark areas against the highlights and dynamism developping to the right.
Have a nice day JY

Hi Jim,
What a capture of that threatening cloud ... sets the whole mood of the atmosphere ... quite a visual impact actually. Well composed with excellent depth and contrast. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Hi Jim,
Very impressive sky, well taken, good result with the good idea to give a large place at the sky in your composition.

Hi Jim,
theathening sky, looks like it will fall on earth!
makes the picture here, great ambiance.

What a impressive dramatic sky Jim, a full of atmosphere landscape, compliments!!!

have a nice day,
Fabio.

I feel it can rain anytime, what with our monsoon in and this lovely shot to cope with!

Very well done, my friend!
Cheers!
Goldy

Jim, this one is much better in the full size one than the thumbnail. Once opened and taken in I find it very compelling and it has huge depth. The hills, the swirling clouds and the sea all blend perfectly, great capture.
