Photographer’s Note
This picture needs your help to improve it. I am getting my new camera soon, so hopefully you will see my photos improve. This one is grainy and not clear. But please try to give me your opinions on it. I took this picture as it's not the typical ones you would see. I felt it had some character to it despite it being abandonned.
Have a great day,
Tosca

Ciao dear Tosca,
interesting image of urban architecture rich in pleasant details. I try to help you for understand because the quality is not excellent. The photo doesn't have a good sharp because you have used a long exposure time (1/60) and probably you didn't have a tripod and you have moved the camera during the shot. In every case it's a problem that is possible to resolve with the PP. I have done a WS, I hope that like you! :-)
Ciao, have a nive day!

Hello Tosca
love your choices of locations and subjects, much different that what we usually see here on TE.
I would love to see the same scene captured later with a new and improved camera.
The noise seen, can be deleted with photoshop. The noise is there probably b/c you had to zoom in from a far distance - with a cheaper camera lens.
you have awesome ideas, looking forward to seeing more

Hi Tosca
Your image is dull, and so well in the mood of the subject. But it can be improved by post processing to get more contrast, colours and sharpness too. I saw that it has been done twice.
Nice regards

Hi Tosca
Paolo is right. It lacks sharpness and is slightly overexposed. In my own experience I have learned three important lessons - tripod, tripod, tripod. It's a pain in the butt to carry around but worth the effort in my opinion. I don't know what software you have but Photoshop Elements is a worthwhile investment if you don't want to fork out the $700+ for Photoshop CS4. The OE can be compensated for in PS but the sharpening will not help an out of focus image. I did a WS and the sharpening did help.
By the way the Abbotsford Photo Arts Club is putting on our annual workshops and seminar on the 17th and 18th of this month. Check out our website at www.apac.bc.ca There are numerous workshops to choose from and not all of them are filled yet. The cost for Sat only is $75 and it includes lunch, many door prizes in the evening and a presentation by the guest speaker Daryl Benson.
Cheers

Hey Tosca,
Certainly does has a lot of character, dont worry if the postprocessing didnt go as well as planned, or if the picture isnt of the best quality, you`ll get there, with a new camera, and some work in adjusting the picture afterwards. The main thing that matters now is the (eye for the) motive.
Best regards.

Hi Tosca,
Welcome on TE. Good original scene, I like it.
My son (TE-account TUE)has a canon powershot 720 IS. He says that he always select a manual set up, for he isn’t satisfied by the automatic setup. Mostly overexposed, he says.

Hi Tosca, you have spotted this intersting subject so well. It is so inner city and grungy. Nice use of the vertical format. I think your WS's are really good, especially #3 where the staricase really jumps out of the image. I've done a B&W just to see what it looks like. Hope that's OK. TFS, Lisa.

Hi Tosca,
I like the picture,in spite of I'm agree with paololg about the quality of the shot and the way to obtain better results. But about the scene I think it transmits very well the passage of time and the neglect.I ask you, there are people still living here? There is a fluorescent turned on at the top..I think this place with some repairs could be an excellent studio.

Hello, Tosca!
I won't say that the house is beautiful, but the picture is! These abandoned houses always have interesting details to be shown, and the different colors make it really interesting! Nice shot!

Tje picture looks a bit burned out in the sky, which probably also expl&ins the faded, nearly pastel colors. However, in this particular case, the colors are interesting because they tend to transport this wall from a unhappy relity into some kind ofdream world.
All the best,
Emmanuel

Hi Tosca
Welcome to TE I hope that you will enjoy your stay. Actually the photograph above attracted me the most in your gallery, because it shows the real world. I like the framing, even some wrote about the washed out sky, but that is not avoidable when using a digital compact, except you crop the sky out or do not shot against the light source.
The flash should not fire, because looking at the distance you certainly had from the building, it is useless. I disagree with comments of others, that the shutter speed of 1/60 is the reason for the "softness". This speed can be hold easily, especially if the camera is so light. I have no problem with F4.5 either, that is fine taking into account that you shot a building in the shadow. Looking at the result of my WS I actually do not see a real softness problem. The "softness" is a result of the downsizing to the maximal size allowed in TE. After resizing, you have to sharpen your photograph. I did not know either when I joined TE and in principle I do not like to sharpen a shot afterwards and I still do not do it. But for TE I have to sharpen the re-sized shot because in the process every photograph will loose sharpness a bit.
Overall, you have got the eye for the unique situation and your framing is fine. Keep it coming - well done
Best regards
Urs

Hi Tosca.
This is actually very image full of character. The shapes, texture and details are well captured in colorful tall frame. Very nice street scene of something that I like.
Thanks for sharing and best regards.

I guess this shot goes to prove my point in some ways... you admitted right off the bat that this image NEEDS improvement (however you've got 20 points on it).
You do seem to have an interest in photographing the gritty side of life which is a refreshing change from the usual sceneic shots we see from Canada.
It's interesting that this image is overexposed as if you would have properly exposed it (a faster shutter speed) that would have resolved any camera shake from the slow shutter speed you used. Hahaha.
All part of the learning process.
The exposure needs to be corrected, but it could definately use a level adjustment as well. The other thing I noticed is that the image is a bit crooked. Click this link for an easy fix that I use on horizons, but you can also apply the same technique to buildings by drawing the line on the vertical line of a building instead of the horizon.
Best of luck!

The neighbourhood is bad from the social point of view, but not from a photographer's point of view :)
The photo is sharp enough to show details and blurred enough to preserve the twilight atmosphere.
This image has a nice palette of red and its hues.

TRy to contrast a little more and better I think.
Anyway,I like how you got the "atmosphere" of the place.
Well done!

Hello Tosca,
Red stairs give a very nice stroke of the brush to your very good composition, using a software like gimp or photoshop you have not to worry about photo clarity or sharpness, if the expose is right. In you photo i think that 1/60 sec was low for your hand.
Regards, Vasilis.

Bonjour Tosca,
My kind regards.
daniel.

dear Tosca,
this wasted feeling is very tasteful to my eyes,
abandoned or broken houses are always photogenic indeed.
and you capture the dim atmosphere well in this shot.
thank you for your nice shot,
Akihisa
P.S. I'll try a ws, only trial.

Hi Tosca,
I love the subject of this pic, I like shots of backstreets as they show something behind the cleaner veneer of many cities. I actually like that pic is a little grainy - adds to the character...well done

Bonsoir Tosca,
Une photo urbaine très intéressante, avec ses graffitis, la vieille brique sale et les couleurs fatiguées. J'aime beaucoup ce genre de photo glauque. Merci du partage.

Hi Tosca,
A fantastic subject which did not escape your eye! I believe that everything was said on the qualities (and the defects also!) of your photo, but the number of WS shows that the photo has a large potential.
For me, I think that it is good to crop the sky and to strengthen colors. If you are not very good in technique photo, do not forget to adjust the camera at the cloudy tweather or lower the speed (until 1/30, it is not out of focus generaly).
Have a nice sunday

This is a kind of building that appears throughout. They are made of a compact bricks. This one has already all the windows blocked. It is possible to keep its facade in case it is considered a national patrimony. But when they are knocked down borns a new modern one instead of an open green space. Such properties usually are sold for a good amount of money. I also like to take pictures of old buildings and imagine the time they were at their splendour with families who belonged to other time. Warm regards. Domingos
