700m High Beach Photo

Photographer’s Note

The same location as the more dramatic shot from last day, that is the Stawamus Chief. Here you can see a much better view of Howe Sound, which is probably the most easily accessible fjord in Canada (an hour away from downtown Vancouver). Not surprising that this place is spiritual for the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh people (damn, now if only I could pronounce that).

Although I like last day's photo better, I posted this one too because it shows another interesting impression: being at the beach, but 700m above sea level. It has a lot of smooth open space, a great place for sunbathing, has a great unobstructed view of the water, people lying about and having a picnic. A very beach-like feeling. Now, if only the water were a little closer...

Hi, Jordan,

I was up there a couple of years ago and I'd say you got a very good shot. You captured that surreal feeling that overtakes you being so high and unprotected, with the breathtaking scene below. I like your thoughts of the elevated beach.. :)

Sharpness and colour are a bit iffy (I guess the hard light at that time of the day played its part there), but what a spectacular view. And a perfect pov to capture it.

Hi, Jordan,

Of the two, I prefer this photo. To me, your subject seems better suited to the landscape layout.

On the other hand, I like the technical qualities of the other shot more: sharper image and -- it seems -- richer color tones.

I've posted a workshop version; hope you don't mind. (I do a lot of editing professionally and find that I almost can't resist the temptation when I see something that I feel I can improve...)

Your shot has a bit of a gauzy or hazy character that can be improved in postprocessing. See what you think.

Anyway, I love the color of the lake and the overall composition in this photo. It is an impressive scene that still preserves a spare elegance.
