Photographer’s Note

The Stawamus Chief is best known for its 700m high rock cliffs. It is somewhat of a thrill amongst certain hikers to see how close to the edge they can walk before the concave plateau at the top gives way to an area too steep to stand upright on, and eventually to vertical cliff face. Is this challenge to yourself daring? Brave? Idiotic? Arrogant? Adventurous?

Perhaps I worry too much, but I always fear that this game will turn into a Daedalus and Icarus moment. Luckily, it hasn't so far. I think aspects of Icarus live within us though, and there are moments when we can feel Icarus' exhiliration of flying with a pair of wax and feather wings, even if we fortunately remain sane enough to avoid his own fate.

Nonetheless, I wonder what this hiker is thinking as he peers over the cliff horizon and sees nothing but more than half a kilometer of air between himself and the cyan waters of the fjord.
