Lake O'Hara, in Yoho National Park. This is the actual lake itself, showing the mountains towering above the blue/green water. The one on the left is Mt. Huber, and the one on the right of centre is Mount Victoria, as seen from the west. The more famous view of Mount Victoria is from the east, as it is the mountain right behind Lake Louise. While Lake Louise is a high traffic area, with hordes of tour buses and people, the Lake O'Hara region has been preserved as a wilderness area, with the number of visitors restricted to only about 100 people per day (not sure what the exact number is, but it's around that). As a consequence, this beautiful area is almost unknown, even within Canada. The reservations to visit Lake O'Hara can be make 3 months in advance, and for the busy July and August times the reservations fill up very fast. If you are in the area an you want to visit without a reservation, then don't give up, because they hold a few spaces open and only give them away 1 day before. There are also cancellations, which is how I got in. I called a few days before and they said that they had a space on August 7 because someone just cancelled. August 7 was on a holiday weekend, and probably the busiest weekend of the year, so I got very lucky.
This was taken with a wide angle at 15mm - the mountains there are huge and close, so I strongly recommend bringing your widest wide angle if you visit.

I like the depth in this view, really 3d and incredible.

First time i see your gallery, how strange. But on the ohter hand, how good because you really have some stunning pictures inside your map. they alle all crisp and bright, rich deep colours, strong contrast and deep saturation, i like that a lot.
Just as in this shot, great light wonderful, perfect composition...excellent work..!!!
stefi (1230) 2006-08-20 11:21
Hi Alvin, I like the use of perspective of ultrawide angle, with details on the foreground and far background. I also like the timing of shooting, with the clouds making games of light & shadows.
A nice Canadian shot!

Wopnderful place! I like the composition, frame and super colors. Very good work. Congratulations

Very majestic scenery and you've captured it well Alvin!
Excellent composition with the shore and lake, leading to the mountains.
The partly cloudy sky has created some really nice shadows on the scene.
PJE (20758) 2006-08-20 12:12
Excellent choice of lens for this capture Alvin. I love the low angled lighting on this lake. Lovely shadows on the water and on the mountian. Its going to be interesting to see your series from this place. Thanks for sharing!

Décidément, le Canada est un bien beau pays !
Merci pour le partage.
bethel (359) 2006-08-20 12:20
I'm not normally that interested in scenic shots but this photo really caught my eye. Fantastic colours and you got this from a great POV. It makes me really want to see Canada!
pboehringer (770) 2006-08-20 12:37
Excellent choice of circum polarizing filter to avoid additional light reflections from the lake and giving an awsome contrast to the clouds and sky. Perfect moment to take a shot with the light and shadows giving an interesting composition.
Best Regards, Peter

I thought Norbert had the exclusivity for pictures of Canadian Parks, but it seems that competition has become tough with yours. I like the way you started by a close-up of the near-by rock and finish on the top of the mountain.
donluicu (24718) 2006-08-20 13:51
superb landscape...nice colors..
what to say?
thanks for sharin it

Wow, what a gorgeous light you have captured here, Alvin. So well composed with beautiful colours. A real pleasure to look at.
nwoehnl (122) 2006-08-20 14:31
Magnificent photo again of the grand O'Hara scenery, Alvin. Fine use of the vertical format to include the foreground stones that help to add depth, and a beautiful luminosity accentuating the scenic value of this place. Great tech again, the polarizer worked really well on this one. Well done.
soran (220) 2006-08-20 15:32
Beautiful mountain photo.
Excellent composition with lake, leading to the mountains covered by shadows of clouds.
Muse (34938) 2006-08-20 15:42
C'est tout simplement superbe!
Les couleurs sont vraiment très belles.
L'eau de ce lac émeraude incite à la baignade:-)
Quel magnifique endroit tu nous fais découvrir.

I do not find words for value the beauty of the scenery and this photography that I consider to be very good. I like very much the water, the light and the depth, as well as the framing that you have chosen, so impressive. A good sky, a few beautiful shades in the mountain ... everything helps to give relief to a spectacular environment. Well done!. Congratulations and thank you.
jjbach (9324) 2006-08-20 17:12
Excellent composition with great vivid colours and wonderful lighting. I also like very much the point of view. Splendid work!
ancevski (3358) 2006-08-20 19:09
this is great photo, the nature is nice and the colors too. The point of view is great.
robiuk (10807) 2006-08-20 19:34
the place is so beautiful that it seems to me that whatever wide lens one has got, you can get a bad photo!
Of course, we all know (I hope) that this is not the case and getting a good compo is a matter of skill - the one you show here!
Difficult vertical format, but you were in the right place with a good POV and... succeeded!
Thanks for the very informative note, too!
danielswalsh (13593) 2006-08-20 20:26
Great shot Alvin,
Looks like a real winner! Great clarity and colors and the clouds really stand out well, but most importantly to me is the level horizon (one of my big pet peeves). Beautiful place Alvin, and you've done it justice in your shot.
Very well done,
singuanti (15250) 2006-08-20 22:09
Hey Alvin. Every time I see a picture from up there I swear I have to get up there pronto. What a sky you had and what stunning scenery you had. Awesome shot Alvin!
partha (14020) 2006-08-20 22:30
Excellent vertical format shot.Nice play of light and shadow.
Wonderful tonality of colour and composed it perfectly.
euryan (8438) 2006-08-21 1:06
Another great mountain composition Alvin. The colors and exposure look perfect. I really like how the some of the foreground is shaded. Also the clouds casting their shadows create good contrast on the mountain, which makes the photo very interesting to look at. Excellent note too.
kebek (5438) 2006-08-21 3:41
Serwus Alvin !
Always impressive area, which i like the most in Your style. Seems You had a perfect and very photogenic weather during Your stay there. Brilliantly exposed scenery, with fine light and shadows play, nicely polarized in classic vertical.
PixelTerror (0) 2006-08-21 6:13
Great one, a lovely rockies scenery with superb side light, a good foreground and the dynamism of the clouds to contribute to the attractivity, colors are superb, a true Rockies wonder !
Have a nice day,
prezntime (3946) 2006-08-21 6:49
I like very much the shadows of the clouds passing over the mountains. Again your POV is spot on. The colors are captured quite nice; the blue of the sky outstanding.
:) out today, be back.
john_c (24662) 2006-08-21 10:49
I had no idea about the visitor restrictions, and thought that this was something limited to the Queen Charlottes...A superb view, well captured in the vertical format. I like the various gradations of subject matter in the scene, with very fine light highlighting the foreground. The wide angle view was a good decision. The glacial blue hue of the lake in mid-frame is an ideal demarcation point for the frame. Well capture, Alvin.
brevbrev14 (140) 2006-08-21 13:05
Wow Alvin A fantastic landascape shot! The colours areso vivid, and it seems to stay there! GREAT POV....and GREAT PLACE well taken!
crhieatt (5347) 2006-08-21 16:16
This certainly looks like an amazing "day out" Alvin - no one could deny that the scenery is quite awesome - and it sounds like you were pretty lucky to get in on this one. Probably filled your memory card right up!!
Critically - perhaps an inch or so off the bottom of the frame would not have been missed and would have given us all a bigger wider shot to enjoy! But I dare say you've got those tucked away for later anyway!
wilkinsonsg (8662) 2006-08-21 16:43
Stunning scenery - very well portrayed by your excellently set up and controlled shot _ TFS :)
soupie01 (789) 2006-08-21 19:04
Excellent, great Pov and colours, love the sky and the light is fantastic. What a beautiful scene.
LCannon (2796) 2006-08-21 20:25
I always love the bright blue sky in contrast to the green of the water. The shadows and like on this peak are wonderful, bringing out all the texture and drama of the scene. Another favorite, another "masterpiece"!!!
eversweb (18) 2006-08-21 20:36
I love the contrasts that you have on the mountain and in the sky. It is a beautiful image. Very sharp green on the trees. Excellant
Ann75 (0) 2006-08-21 22:59
Oh, what a gorgeous shot of Lake O'Hara! I love the lighting here so much with the sunlight hitting the foreground rocks and water. I also love how the colour of the water changes to the beautiful turquois blue. Amazing quality, amazing composition and great sharpness! Exellent work and keep them coming, Alvin!
plimrn (21344) 2006-08-21 23:33
Your wide-angle captured three stunning layers, the red-gold rocks in the transparent waters, the glacial green of the deeper lake and the steep rocks against the blue, cloud-decorated sky; detail and color is excellent.
alana (2625) 2006-08-22 0:54
As always, perfect composition, amazing colors, contrast, light, your point of view and perspective. I admire of all your stunning landscapes...
mphotographies (1976) 2006-08-22 2:23
Wow...this is waht I call capturing the great outdoors! All the elements are are well composed, great POV, image quality is excellent, sharpness and colours are fantastic. The clouds engaged in recreation with light and gave dramatic cast of shadows in the entire landscape!
Nice work dude!
markstaples (15670) 2006-08-22 6:02
This is a truly stunning image. Exposure has been managed to perfection, the colours are vibrant, truly excellent quality. Superb work.

I read your note with interest; It's always a pleasure to see and learn something new from somewhere you have been close to so you can relate to it. (ie the Lake Louise side)
The clarity of the water can be seen from the fg rocks and I love the way the colour grades to the stunning green of the Canandian Rockies' lakes. Excellent light/shade contrasts on the mountains.
Emile (20350) 2006-08-22 10:33
Impressive shot with an excellent POV, clear, neat and sharp. Love the way you captured the rocks in the fg giving a great perspective and depth effect with the beautiful mountains in the bg. Very good composition and colors contrast. Nicely captured.
agbonavita (0) 2006-08-22 12:15
Very pretty place. The colors and lights are suberb. Your POV is really very good, nice use of the wide angle.
This lake is depth? or you can cross it walking?

capthaddock (28790) 2006-08-23 21:39
Hi Alvin - wow, how can it better than this? Gorgeous scenery combined with the ideal light and perfect vantage point. OK a touch of freshly fallen snow to further dramatize the peaks would be a miracle, but now I'm really fantasizing.
toni_al (15875) 2006-08-24 5:24
Superbe paysage, avec une bonne gestion des plans, avec ces rocher qui donnent du relief.
très belles couleurs
kensimage (8561) 2006-08-24 11:46
Great clouds in this one, Alvin. And the golden low light sets things off really nicely. Surely a classic landscape photo. What else can I say that hasn't already been said? This one is obviously very (deservedly) popular. Regards, Ken.
