Here's a partial overview of Victoria Harbor. You know when I think of Canada about the last thing that comes to mind are palm trees! But here one is and if you look at the end of the sidewalk there's another over there. I did some research on how they manage to live in this climate. The southern area of Vancouver Island has among the mildest winters in all of Canada, so that naturally helps. But over the years they have grown palm trees that are resistant to freezing in Oregon and Washington. If you took one out of California it wouldn’t last long but this hardened version is more resistant to bad weather. As they get more resistant to freezing they continue to move north with their plantings.
The big building is The Empress and on the very far right those colorful flowers actually spell out "Welcome to Victoria". I’ll be posting a few more of The Empress which is a high-end hotel. Taken in mid-afternoon.

Hi Steve, You have well played the saturated colors in this colorful picture. I like the composition with the walkway leading our view around the harbor. I enjoy the view of the clear and strong contrast of the different colors in this picture. Good clarity and depth.

I didn't look at where the shot was from and ended up, once I opened it, scrolling from bottom to top. The city really through me once I already had the palm tree in my head. Wow, Victoria is a beautiful city, isn't it? Nice, crisp clear shot - good multi-layers of blue.

Wonderful light and color in your beautiful composition with the flower garden of umbrellas ling the walkway, and the tree-lined boat basin. i very partial to multihulls so I'm pleased at the inclusion of a catamarran. The grand old Empress Hotel provides a lovely backdrop. Did you have tea there?

Nice Photo. Great colors! That is a Windmill palm(Trachycarpus fortunei) native to China. It is one of the hardiest palms around. I grew up on the Oregon Coast where many are grown, to many peoples shock! British Columbians are very proud of the fact that they can grow palms, and if you get to Vancouver you'll see many of them planted by the bay. Great photo on a rare clear day!

un été qui a des allures tropicales pour un été canadien.
Les couleurs sont superbes et prennent des airs de Floride ou de Californie.
Un petit dommage qu'il y ait ces travaux en arrière plan.
Un parfait cadrage.

Wonderful color, sharpness, contrast saturation & pov. Nothing to fault here. Good work & tfs!

Palms in Canada.
Another thing interesting is that usually palm trees grow together planted in a line, but here they decided to plant a couple of them, just to see wheter they'll stay. This certainly doesn't look Canadien landscape.
I think that accenting colours sometimes is not good. Here I think it is.

Exactly or Victoria is a tropical region! I happy read your note, I'm not expert in these region of climate, I like the composition with the walkway leading our view around the harbor, great perspective and depth effect, very well done.
Have a nice weekend,

Hi Steve. Sorry to say that contrary to the fanbase I didn't find much interest in the previous photo with the ship, but this one here I like a lot again - a whopping postcard with a fine composition and wonderful colors. Well-chosen shooting angle to include the downward stairs and have a diagonal alignment of the promenade around the marina. Good DOF all the way back to the famous hotel, and crisp details all over. I think that the city official who approved to erect this ugly new building to the right behind the hotel deserves a good beating though. Greetings from Tokyo.

This picture is colorfull and rich. I like the composition including the flowers.
aloyho (6798) 2006-03-31 7:28
This is a contrast from many of the winter shots that I still see around and must say it brightens up the mood and with all those beautiful and vivid colours. It indeed is refreshing! I like how you let the steps and the circular pathway lead our eyes through all those umbrellas, buildings and boats. The saturation is just perfect. The place is very inviting. I'll keep that in mind. Excellent shot!! Have a pleasant day.

I can see what we missed; Vancouver Island was part of out plans when we were in Washington State, but we ran out of time - bad planning.
Well composed from the corner of the harbour giving us diagonals in all directions.
I expect you stayed at the Empress!.

very colourfull shot Stephen,
a well taken shot, good in details, very nice colours, When I see this I get summer feelings, good job.
capthaddock (28790) 2006-03-31 9:44
Hi Stephen - gorgeous vivid colours, what a far cry from the drab and dreary reputation of BC climate, the palm tree adds a mediterranean touch.
Cormac (26565) 2006-03-31 10:41
This is one of the nicest shots I've ever seen of Victoria! You managed to get so many different elements into the shot, and show so many different aspects of the city, yet the photo doesn't feel crowded. Great work!
quantabeh (5205) 2006-03-31 14:04
This is really an interesting observation about the palm trees.!!
btw, what a full composition, but no busy. I enjoy it, with its great colors. Most of the colors in the color chart can probably be found here.
beautiful work Steve

Well Well what a wonderful sight this is...and I get to critique a lovely photo in my own country taken by an American. Excellent harbour setting viewpoint Stephen. It seems that any photo taken from this place looks great, but you chose the angle that shows alot of depth. Also excellent color from the afternoon sun! I love it...makes me want to go there.
cam (9043) 2006-03-31 21:05
Those palm trees were not there in 1979.
You have choosen a beautiful point of view of this famous landmark,a high vantage place, good for a deep depth of field.
You thought this one before firing.
And thanks for the trivia.
Jeppe (18654) 2006-04-01 2:47
I seen palm trees at the south coasts of England - Bistrol I think it was. A very fine and colourful place you visit here - I like the daily life view as well. Thanks for the information about the palm

Très belle prise de vue avec toutes ces couleurs qui se mélangent.
Un endroit où il doit faire bon vivre. Je remarque que les constructions poussent comme des champignons, il faut dire que la situation est particulièrement agréable.
Très bonne composition.

Well, you have now reached one of my favourite cities on your trip...A fine capture of this leisurely waterfront scene, with good colour and tones. You managed good contrast considering the time of day. I like how you focussed on the palm tree and placed it superbly in the scene. The POV also takes advantage of the descending steps and railing. Very fine work, Mr. Steve. I look forward to your pending postings of the Empress. All the best.
Galmeida (12559) 2006-04-01 14:06

Beautiful colourful picture. I like these total view, but I should also want to see the beautiful façade of the Empress with its lovely Virginia creeper in close up.
dsidwell (9783) 2006-04-02 23:24
Oh yes, this is a nice place, Stephen. I've been here and recognize this view. How odd for a palm tree to be here, for sure! You've placed it at a strong position in the frame for its attention, too.
mumek (20202) 2006-04-03 7:28

Being from Beautiful BC, how could I not critique this shot...
Great shot of Victoria harbour. Brilliant colors, but not overdone and un-natural.
As I mentioned in your other Victoria posting- it's been years since I've been down this way- and it's nice to see it again...
I'm intrigued by the building going up behind The Empress. If I recall correctly- it looks to be in the place where The Crystal Gardens is/ was. hmmm...
Thanks for sharing,
