The Space Centre shares one of the most distinctive buildings in the city with the Museum of Vancouver
The statue on the lake is a crab
H. R. MacMillan Space Centre
The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, founded 1968, is an astronomy museum in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, that is located at Vanier Park in Vancouver. Inside the building, there are live demonstrations on science in the GroundStation Canada Theatre, exhibits and games in the Cosmic Courtyard, and shows about astronomy in the Planetarium Star Theatre. Next to the building is the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory. This centre of astronomy is a popular attraction in Vancouver.
The Space Centre is named for H. R. MacMillan, a British Columbia industrialist and philanthropist. The building was designed in the 1960s by architect Gerald Hamilton to house what was then called The Centennial Museum. The planetarium was added as part of a pre-construction re-design. The Space Centre originated as the H.R. MacMillan Planetarium until its re-branding in the 1990s when it expanded to include exhibit space into one of the wings of the building it shares with the Museum of Vancouver. The facility was refurbished and renovated to include the Space Centre exhibit space in 1997-98 by Matsuzaki Wright Architects.
Museum of Vancouver
The Museum of Vancouver (MOV) (formerly the Vancouver Museum) is a local museum located in Vanier Park, Vancouver, British Columbia. The MOV is the largest civic museum in Canada and the oldest in Vancouver. The museum was founded in 1894 and recently went through a major re-visioning process in 2008. It creates Vancouver-focused exhibitions and programs that encourage conversations about what was, is, and can be Vancouver. Permanent exhibitions tell the city’s stories from the early 1900s to the late 1970s and are complemented by contemporary, groundbreaking feature exhibits. It shares facilities with the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre.

Hello Danos - You have used the distinctive lines of the architecture well in this symmetrical composition. I find the curve of the walkway particularly beautiful and together with the whiteness of the roof it makes a super contrast to the blue of the sky. Nice to see the off-centre figures too adding a little human detail to the shot.
Have a good weekend

Amazing idea to use the Flying Plate image for the Space museum. Another interesting page of Vancouver, very nice postcard format.
I see you are missing the North America. Me too. ;)
Didi (60590) 2014-03-15 2:12
Very good point of view on the museum
You made a nice close encounter of the third kind :)
Subhogen (4067) 2014-03-15 2:20
The space centre indeed looks like an UFO and the statue in front like a marauding alien. Nice view of modern architecture very apt for the subject of the photo. I like the blue sky contrasting the white buildings so well. Very well done and thanks for sharing.
tenretin (2657) 2014-03-15 3:47
The flying saucer side caught my eye. I'm not disappointed watching the picture that is well worth the building.
This is well documented.
ikeharel (76041) 2014-03-15 3:53
Shaped as a soucer, match perfectly for space theme of the museum.
Picture superbly taken from the point taken, and the fountain is no-less interesting.
Fine photo, good clarity and light used.
Have a nice weekend,
Kamilutka (8107) 2014-03-15 4:04
nice choice of the format - this semi panorama enhances the shape of the building. I like the sculpture and the fountain in front of it - they are dead original! Lovely colors and good light management.
Thanks for sharing

The subject is well framed. The point of view is showing the details and the colours of the architecture of the Space cente museum of Vancouver. The good luminosity is bringing out the colours. Have a nice day.

Noel_Byrne (33048) 2014-03-15 8:40
What a cool building, and thanks also for your excellent note. A fine symmetrical composition and the silver white sheen of the place looks lovely against this vivid blue sky. Love that sculpture out front too, is it a crab? It looks very proud and happy with itself whatever it is!
Thanks as always
PaulVDV (31147) 2014-03-15 9:24
A very remarkable building and certainly its roof.
Perhaps the design was inspired by an UFO.
The crab is enormous measured by the people beside the pool.
Best regards, Paul

Bonsoir, cher ami Danos,
bukitgolfb301 (44210) 2014-03-15 17:29

curious shapes of this building, it looks like an ufo. the sculpture of the crab is very interesting. nice elements in the compo, good light, framing and details. TFS.
mirosu (16273) 2014-03-16 6:10
Excellently composed photo, the symmetrical arrangement works very well here. Nice view up to this interesting Space Centre building. The building is in very good light, there is superb contrast against blue sky.
Very well done.
abmdsudi (57148) 2014-03-16 7:38
Lovely image in brilliant colors and light, a lively shot well cropped that brings all its features to life. Crispy, bright and superb contrast making this a very fine image. The overall effect is very pleasing to the eye. Super capture and excellent infor notes. Congrats
jcpix (13930) 2014-03-16 8:52
Aptly named this building, because the top portion looks like a spaceship that could break off and fly away at any moment. :) And what's with the metallic crab...there really are aliens living amongst us! haha
Quite an interesting building, both retro and futuristic. I like that you've chosen a straight forward composition, utilizing the arched ramp to connect both sides of the frame. Bright, sharp and well balanced, this is a very pleasant presentation of the center. The detailed notes enhance the image as well, nicely achieved all the way around. Have a great week ahead. All the best.
adramad (48368) 2014-03-16 9:26
Splendid POV, showing us all this modern wide area, where the circular building is the protagonist for its originality and charm, great crab sculpture is a perfect complement.
Magnificent this range of very natural colors.
Very well maintained brightness and optimum sharpness.
Well done. I love it.
Have a nice Sunday.
ChrisJ (117197) 2014-03-16 10:04
I love the big crab sculpture with the fountain out the front of the building. Worth a detailed shot in its own right imho. The seated people at left provide scale and add a welcome splash of red and blue colours to the monotone mix of b&w and grey. Tfs!
boa (7543) 2014-03-16 13:10
i did not visit this museum when i was in Vancouver but it looks interesting! Good symmetry , sharpness and colors in this picture. It was also a good idea to include people in this shot, well done!
Have a nice evening/
Royaldevon (41732) 2014-03-16 14:15
I am not surprised that you were attracted to photograph this building, it is the most iconic shape, like the generic flying saucer. The crab, with its claws aloft, seems to be celebrating the building.
Did you take any close-ups of the crab?
I'm sure it would be interesting in its own right.
The building has lovely curved lines, which you have captured beautifully in this nicely symmetrical composition.
My warm regards,
krzychu30 (15512) 2014-03-17 1:52
excellent approach to modern architecture!
This Space Centre reminds really some kind of Spaceship.
I enjoy you wide-angle perspective here, which presents the architecture in best quality and with all details.
Also the contrast between its white facade and blue sky is great and makes the scene more expressive.
Have a nice day
Graal (103038) 2014-03-17 3:46
unusual architecture. Building like any UFO. Interesting place in Canada well presented here. Good informations and photo-work.

Very nice picture of that museum.Beautiful architecture completed by a very nice sculpture in the middle of the fountain.Nice blue sky. Very well done.
Hava anice day.
Corry (4508) 2014-03-17 13:05
dip (23890) 2014-03-17 13:58
mcmtanyel (26896) 2014-03-17 18:09
I like the deep blue of the sky. Good POV with a symmetric view of the buildings shows off the interesting architecture.

Like modern museums, are well organized, as must be it, after the works of renovation
As always you chose a distant good POF leaving a space at the front and great contrast at the back with the so blue sky
Like the silver crab, original
Well seen and done

A very interesting building, like an UFO that has landed here. The people in the picture add a scale for the building and for the special sculpture.
mkamionka (39489) 2014-03-19 8:41
lovely presentation of this extraordinary structure. I like its unique shape and the metallic crab at the entrance. Great weather resulted in lovely colors.

kato (11630) 2014-03-20 17:35
You're capturing well this architecture by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the Space center-Museum with an unique design of round shape and fountain/sculpture in front of it.
macjake (70997) 2014-03-21 3:23
Ah Yes...the Space Centre...been here many times!
looking at it now makes me want to photograph it today and post it :)
that Crab is an excellent addition.
Did you know that the Crab has a Time Capsule in it? to be opened many many decades in the future!
love this pulled back version, you had a perfect day to shoot it. fine exposure levels.
love the "ufo" too

Nice architectural shot, the symmetry strengthens the graphism of the building. Nice light management.
Angshu (56760) 2014-04-01 21:33
Indeed the building has quite an unique shape and the statue of the crab also adds interest. A nice postcard shot, symmetrical with nice colours! Well done...
UlfE (14641) 2014-04-02 12:09
Great architecture. This intention is perhaps to give the impression of spaceship but it also ressembles and ancient temple. The building was partly shaded and the lighting was strong but you handled these conditions in an excellent way! TFS and have a nice evening!
jacquest (19045) 2014-04-25 3:24
This is a good and symetrical view on the space center and the fountain. The people give a good sense of proportion. The light is good and gives nice colors and details.
