The title refers to the fact that this is the second in my series on these old rural mailboxes. It also happens to be the name of a chain of stores offering mailboxes and other things (only local people will get the reference).
This is a nice example of the rural way of life in my area, showing the collection of old mailboxes by the side of the road, with the farm in the background. I wanted to get out and see some of these farms before they are swallowed by the ever growing sprawl of suburbia. In the workshop I've posted a black & white version. I couldn't make up my mind which was better, but I like the different colours of the mailboxes in the orignal, so I went with that.

A beautiful shot. The sky seems to be in motion. Great POV. Amazing corelation between the mail boxes and the clouds.
robertosalguero (284) 2006-07-20 22:36
A very good composition. The clouds are unreal. The colours and sharpness make this a great shot.

This shot could have easily have been taken in the rural American South. I like it. It has a very rustic feel.

Magnifique ciel, belle présentation, les nuages sont de toutes beautées..TFS..Michel

Hey Alvin, definitely the colour original over the workshop - though the latter does have a dramatic effect as well. But the beautiful bold blues that come out with that polarizer really make this shot for me. As you noted, the colours in the boxes contrasted against that great sky, is a nice touch as well. TFS!
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2006-07-21 0:06
Beautiful shot with an amazing sky and excellent colours. Very well done.
bantonbuju (51815) 2006-07-21 0:30
this is a parade of mailboxes :-))
i like the composition here with "models" occupying a quarter of the frame and with the sky of delicate clouds being a predeomant part of the image;
i just wonder exactly which settings in your cammera you had and achieved these results in terms of colours and saturation etc.
best wishes, jerzy

Alvin .. Awesome sky , and dramtic mailboxes good comp, and colors..

Hi Alvin, very beautiful the direction of these old mailboxes, in the same direction of the clouds. The image gives a good idea of simple but honest rural areas in Canada (as simple as in my Country). Saturation of colours, details and sharpness are OK. Contrast and deep shadows are really typical of 17-55 DX.
I have to say that, even if colours are lovely, I prefer BW version. I don't know, it reminds me something of old A. Adams' shots.
Have a nice time,
stiginthedump (1823) 2006-07-21 1:16
Great capture here Alvin, you gotta love the sky! It's a shame about that blade of grass interfering with the view of the one box. It looks like you spent a bit of time composing the shot so i was wondering if you'd considered 'removing it' i.e pulling the grass out!
The workshop is very nice as well, but the offending piece of grass is a little more obvious...maybe the cloning tool is required!
keribar (43841) 2006-07-21 1:20
Although not as powerful as the previous one, this picture is also excellent and shows as an abandoned place, something like a ghost town. Not only the message it gives, but the composition is A1, and so are the polaried clouds.
Many thanks - Izzet Keribar

Very good composition, light and colours. A good photo, Alvin!
greg64g (11193) 2006-07-21 1:35
Again a superb shot, of course the colored version is great but my prefered is this b&w red channel.
krakowiak (4762) 2006-07-21 2:15
Good idea for this photo which is in a very good quality, great detailed. And looks great with this beautyful sky!
fertxu (323) 2006-07-21 2:37
Beautiful view, bright colours. The clouds are unreal.
vapours (8264) 2006-07-21 3:07
Well I was about to say it was a nice and simple shot, that was until I had discovered that mountain tucked away on the left. Love the colours, especially the sky. Nice work.

Alvin, Beautiful work with splindid colors.
PixelTerror (0) 2006-07-21 4:18
Another nice entry in your mailboxes series, or how to turn a rather simple subject into a photographic success, I like both versions, this one keeps the dynamism from the clouds and adds to it beautiful colors, I also appreciate that you have framed the background mountain just between two boxes.
Have a nice week end,
Haymotion (2753) 2006-07-21 4:18
Ciel impressionant, couleur qui ressorte bien..
Bravo, bien vue
craiggc (2509) 2006-07-21 4:34
Well seen Alvin - the mailboxes make a pleasing foreground. I love the various states of their metal forms - rusting, galvanised, painted. Their contruction and condition are great.
The sky is great, but you could have made a feature out of these mailboxes in close-up alone.
As for the choice of colour or B&W, personnaly I think the B&W is stronger, however the colour one has more interest in the foreground.
Both are worth seeing and I'm glad I did!
baba_flies (8829) 2006-07-21 5:01
Excellent colors. I love the Western style-country road atmosphere. Blue is the sky out here, lovely with the tiny clouds.
veronika (6058) 2006-07-21 5:03
this looks soooo romantic to me.. and i dont know why :)) Perfect shot with amazing sky and colours.. I would like to have a mailbox like that :)
nwoehnl (122) 2006-07-21 5:14
Hi Alvin. Well on my trips through North America I had seen a couple of these stores, so the reference rang a bell ;) Good idea to use the mailboxes as a colorful foreground interest for your simple rural composition. Colors pop on this one, and the polarizer worked well too, enhancing the interesting graphical patterns in the sky.
ben4321 (9875) 2006-07-21 5:30
This is really good Alvin. The rusty old mailboxes are interesting and provide a good foreground to that amazing big blue sky.
Really good work.
ChrisJ (114799) 2006-07-21 6:10
Wonderful composition including the magic number of 3. A superb pov, with excellent color & sharpness. Good work!

Paolo (41222) 2006-07-21 8:43
Hi Alvin, another excellent shot with mailboxes.
that one, so colorful and with a fantastic sky is really beautiful.
excellent POV and great light.
Ann75 (0) 2006-07-21 16:58
This is such a beautiful and colourful photo. I love the different coloured mailboxes that stand out against the stunning blue sky. I also love the colours and the view over the field. The little hint of Mount Baker between two of the mailboxes is a wonderful addition. Excellent shot, Alvin!
robiuk (10807) 2006-07-21 18:24
I'll be honest and admit I can't decide which one I like better.
Following your POV, I like colours in this one, but mainly as a result of using the polariser.
On the other hand, the b/w is soooo strong (due to working with red channel), almost as if it was taken with IR filter... if you know what I mean.
Have you increased saturation at all in this one?
erdna (5711) 2006-07-21 22:25
A beautiful photograph! The sky with thde streaky clouds is lovely but the scene stealer are the mailboxes. Their colors, design and their supports are very interesting and puts a smile on my face. The black and white is equally superb.
singuanti (15250) 2006-07-21 22:46
Hi Alvin. I really like this series you're doing of mailboxes as they both good and unique. Yes we have those stores all around me in Virginia so I got the humor in the title. That's one heck of a sky!
dcawker (5717) 2006-07-22 10:00
Hi Alvin, Nice POV & dramatic sky here too! Regards, Doug
john_c (24666) 2006-07-22 11:45
An excellent follow-up shot to the previous post. I like the stark contrast in hues here of the mailboxes and also with the sky. Your low angle perspective works well in partially hiding the road and showing the flat, spreading fields. The dreamy wisps of cloud in the brilliant sky do enhance. Very well captured.
capthaddock (28790) 2006-07-22 12:13
Hi Alvin - wow, so simple but beautiful, the wispy polarised clouds do a gret job of filling the sky with interest, I really like how both the near and far objects are perfectly in focus, I much prefer the colour version.
avigur_11 (22099) 2006-07-22 17:01
Alvin, there is an extraordinary mood here. It takes me back to the movies of the 60's, and reminds me also an old campaign movie against the cold war. The "pose" and the position of the mailboxes in the frame are excellent, and the sky is amazing. IMO tis goes better in colors, it is much much sronger. Great job.
kevinos (7517) 2006-07-23 8:00
Your pictures have a greate sence of drama , Alvin. As with this picture, you have an eye for making a dramaric picture from not very much. Even the clouds seem to be cooperating with you, to produce an electfying image.
balatrek (7455) 2006-07-23 12:28
Nos muestras una imagen de contrastes sorprendentes, el cielo es espectacular y los contrastes de los buzones fantásticos, me gusta la composición, has realizado un buen trabajo, felicidades.
tjanze (5674) 2006-07-24 3:51
Great motive those post boxes.Sky behind is amazing.Good interesting composition with beautiful colors.
PJE (20758) 2006-07-24 21:24
Alvin I love the color much more than the black and white version. The mail boxes appear to be shooting clouds as it were. And each mail box has its own individual personality. I like the dented one in the middle! Excellent photo just as the vists to this posting confirms! Thanks for sharing! I love it!
benkrut (2407) 2006-07-26 22:10
The composition is perfect - three different, old mailboxes in the left corner and the amazing clouds on the sky above. Great idea of catching the image like this.
An hour ago I saw a picture-joke with the mailboxes like here. Just one with the inscription "bills" was on a 5-meter stick. :)
Polonaise (5802) 2006-07-27 20:31
Yes, it is, Alvin.
Those mailboxes are posing for you quite charmingly, without faked modesty and rather quite naturally.
It's a portrait - All right.
And the blue skies came gratis, free of charge.
Not too many of us, here on TE, are able to create SOMETHING out of NOTHING.
mumek (20202) 2006-07-28 7:14
Good morning Alvin!
Very artistic composition with super colours. Great contrast between mailboxes and the blue sky. Super shot!
Thanks for posting
donluicu (24724) 2006-07-30 3:34
in fact i prefer this one...than thebb&w one
i think the clouds deserve a colored treatment...
boonie (779) 2006-07-31 21:23
I found another wonderful sky hanging over the old mailbox. They are classic and a vanishing piece of our culture. Find some more to share.

An aptly named title Alvin,
Great composition, great levels, great colors, great work- as usual mate.
All the best,

amazing polarizer colors here, i do like the mailboxes for added interest also. not seen very often, but good thinking and well composed!
Bien (4745) 2006-09-08 12:13
Hi Alvin, I have always liked seeing these mailboxes in films. I like the way they are standing along the road, their house a few miles further on; there is something very lonely and patient about them. I love how they seem to bow their heads into the direction of the clouds, making this shot very energetic in a way. The colours are really marvellous too. Really splendid work! Sabine
Teten (582) 2006-10-10 13:45
Amazing shot, lovely composition and perfect use to the timing. Well done!
Dyerco (10185) 2007-08-17 23:25
I really like this shot but I think you're B&W is better. Nice placement of the mailboxes and excellent POV. I was looking at your favourites and I am impressed with the incredible sharpness and clarity of your images, many of which were shot with the 17-55mm.
pierrefonds (66973) 2007-09-01 4:15
A good POV of the mail boxes under a beautifuk sky, the photo has a good composition, DOF and nice colors. Thanks for sharing.
