This is a shot from near where I live - a suburb of Vancouver called Cloverdale. This used to be a farming community, but has in recent years been swallowed up by masses of suburban housing and commuter families. The older, original Cloverdale still exists, but you have to look pretty hard to find it these days. This simple, bare bones old mailbox, with the address stencilled on and nothing else, sitting out in the fields, at least shows some of the old, rural character of the place.

Beautiful composition, Alvin. This really captures the sadness of disappearing history. I guess there is no escaping it anymore... It is only in photos and paintings that we can preserve the memories.

Nice and sharp B&W picture. Sending an interesting message thru this simple object: the old fashioned mailbox. Greatly composed.
Xplorator (667) 2006-07-18 22:13
even though simplistic in nature, the very low angle make goves an extremelly dramatic point of view in the composition, result is fabulous. B&W is very suitable. This is a "ten out of ten" in my opinion. Thank you for sharing!

Beautiful black and white shot. I love the subject of the mailbox taken from below with the beautiful wind blown sky above. Great shot for black and white. The composition is great and the details are beautiful!

I like the simple composition a lot, the sky is very beautifull.

Hi Alvin. I just love this shot. It's so simple yet so dramatic. I think b/w was a great way to go with it to give it a classic feel. That sky is awesome. Good work Alvin!
PJE (20758) 2006-07-19 0:17
Well Alvin I must say good choice making this a black and white presentation. These are the good old fashioned mailboxes that I like. The sky really makes this photo special.
Izobretenik (1268) 2006-07-19 1:42
That's a very simple shot but how artistic the impression is here ! Maybe would I have darkened the picture a bit more or tried to dramatize the sky a bit more, but that's just the way I like looking at pictures. The sky has a nice shape and the black and white choice is good to me. The only thing I think is really missing is a more old time atmosphere that would enhance the picture's beauty and artistic sense.

A black and white shot! Can this really be from Alvin? No, I think this one must actually be from Cormac, the dog. He can do the upload because your computer is probably permanently logged in to TE.
Well, he did a fine job on this one, even with no allowance for his being a dog. The POV is great, emphasizing the weathered post and the hand-lettered mailbox, with the huge sky to suggest open rural spaces. Give Cormac an extra dog biscuit for this one, because he's probably not much into green smileys. Regards, Ken.

Fine post-work on this one, Alvin, to bring impact and even drama to what is a rather simple scene. The low shooting angle on the post box, the grass bending in the wind, and the cloudy pattern migrating over the sky blend into a nice atmospheric total.
marianita (3455) 2006-07-19 3:46
wonderful photograph!excellent composition, great atmospehre created from teh use of black and white!teh sky looks like feathers
donluicu (24724) 2006-07-19 4:11
excellent choice of b&w conversion, to transform this classical and simple image into a dark and mysterious compo....

Is this your contribution to Didi's theme ?
I'm generally not fond of B&W pics, but I have to say it works well here, it provides simplicity in the tonal range that helps to focus on the way the clouds seem to radiate out of the mail box and the dynamic induced by this effect.
Have a nice day,

Your photo is interesting. I like the composition and frame. Curious sky. The black and white increase this emotion. Excelent shot.
craiggc (2509) 2006-07-19 5:33
Excellent B&W image - good contrast and clarity. Nice low viewpoint makes the shot interesting
markstaples (15670) 2006-07-19 7:20
What a fantastic sky. I'd never have thought to put such an image in black and white, but it definitely works so well and in fact adds to the impact. The post box is well placed in the image. More impact is created by your low POV. A very striking peace of world. Well done.

Very interesting view. Its hard to beleive that this place is surrounded by Suburbia as it looks so rural. Same thing is happening where my parents live 40 KM west of Toronto. THe population of the town has almost tripled in 16 years!!
NIce black and white image, good capture of the details.
Filko (1134) 2006-07-19 10:10
Looks like a painting...shadows of gray... Well done, well done...very nice...
john_c (24666) 2006-07-19 10:28
You have really captured the spirit of this rural scene and the B&W format works well. As your note indicates, these scenes are becoming rarer and rarer as we steadily encroach upon and destroy the countryside. I like your low angle view, the clarity of the grasses, and the whimsical sky. The fence posts also enhance. A superb capture. First rate.
Paolo (41222) 2006-07-19 11:30
Hi Alvin, wonderful shot! that fantastic sky and the box letter are well captured and composed with a great dramtic light and b/w.
it seems a scene of a David Lynch movie!
pasternak (15185) 2006-07-19 11:37
This is an awesome picture, Alvin, your low POV and the gorgeous B&W treatment make this old mailbox look so dramatic, like a monument, under this fantastic sky! Very good work!
Dari (24) 2006-07-19 11:52
stunning image, Alvin! Such a good contrast here... easy to feel atmosphere from this photo: grass touched by wind, IMPRESSIVE sky... GREAT!
elmec (12210) 2006-07-19 14:21
I love this kond of photos!
Perfect composed, and the blask and white tones are great to show the structure of sky and box!
Dragonheart (8414) 2006-07-19 14:50
A lovely shot, POV is interesting, BW looks great, good details visible and perfect sharpness.
wilkinsonsg (8662) 2006-07-19 15:03
A classic shot, very well rendered in B&W - TFS :)
bebel (7588) 2006-07-19 16:57
c'est très curieux comme contribution au thème de Didi mais pourquoi pas ? en tout cas ce BW est excellent avec un ciel très présent. De plus cette contre plongée depuis le sol renforce ce climat dramatique...
robiuk (10807) 2006-07-19 18:53
a superb b/w conversion and, woah!, what a beautiful sky!
Did you have to sit on the ground to take this one?
keribar (43841) 2006-07-20 0:00
I have discovered your pictures very recently, I wish I had more time to look at all of them. You have a style, which fits exactly in my way of seeing things, and I appreciate it very much. This one is certainly a prize-winner for me - Best - Izzet Keribar

I am agree with your b&w choice, a classic pov completely north american mood, with the great sky. great work
ChrisJ (116078) 2006-07-20 5:04
Good tonal range & a dramatic sky. I like the wideangled view, & low shooting pov. Congratulations!

Beautiful composition, Alvin. Very nice and sharp B&W picture. The details are beautiful ... Congratulations

Welcome to the Canadian section
I note a very good POV on this old mail box.
Contrast are very well setted on this nice B&W composition.
talatbay (2424) 2006-07-20 14:30
The image has very strong effect because of your POV. Prefering B&W and light controlling is perfect.
stiginthedump (1823) 2006-07-21 1:18
I prefer this to your newer shot Alvin. As we are up close and personal with this box, you've given it a personality (and i guess we can call the number it's name!). Maybe i might have opted for more sky, like the other one.

very nice shot....
agbonavita (0) 2006-07-22 14:10
Another great phoyo Alvon. The B&W was a good choice.
It remember me a scene from the new Superman movie.
I'm think who pretty was the sky in a color photo. The ballet of clouds.
Emile (20352) 2006-07-27 17:33
This is an excellent composition, very good B&W picture, impressive sky with the interesting clouds. Very neat and sharp shot. Good POV. Well done. TFS.
