Photographer’s Note

Vancouver's False Creek - home to many sailboats whose residents like to live close to downtown without having to pay high rents. One problem though - if you are anchored in the harbour to avoid paying for moorage in a marina, how do you get to shore? The answer - on one of these small row boats, which you then leave by the shore so you can get back to your boat. There are dozens of these row boats around False Creek. I like the way these old, modest little boats contrast with the modern high rise apartment buildings overlooking them.

Wow Alvin, very good composition. 3 elements in the foreground, contrasting background with the town, huge DOF. Very good work.

I like the pov of your photo and the composition with those small boats in the foreground,they are giving a small glimpse of life in Vancouver.
Did you use a polariser in order to get a good view of the underwater rocks

Alvin, you stated my thought exactly in your note--the contrast between ordinary little boats and gleaming skyscrapers makes this very interesting. The composition is excellent with the way the boats are pointed, and arranged in the frame. One picky thing--you cut off the oar on the right side. Fine shot, though! Regards, Ken.

Hi Alvin. Yes there's no doubt that much of Vancouver is new and this skyline is a great example of that but what a beautiful offset these old boats present. I see you have a 17-55, who makes that? Well done Alvin.

Very good shot, i like the POV, the colours and contrasts are great. Nice reflection on the water. The three boats in the foreground and the skyscrapers in the back give your picture a good perspective and depth. Very good composition.

Hi, Alvin,
Wonderfull snapshot. The colors are perfect. The idea's too.
POV worries a little. Did you make another shot from a point to the right. In this case the row of the boats would be leading to the skiscrappers instead of just crossing the photo.
BTW this is a tandem, not a troika (i am Russian :-).

Your Vancouver series is really delightful, Alvin - in addition to the well-framed urban details, the beautiful afternoon light is always there to give an extra appeal. Here, the foreground boats are well included and together with the vertical format contribute to a good effect of depth. Very nice photo.

I like here the succession of boats that together with the vertical framing gives an excellent depth, also seeing such boats so close to downtown gives a good idea about the quality of life in Vancouver, light is also a good point here. I added a final touch in the attached WS.

Alvin, yet another great shot of Vancouver. I always like pictures of boats for their graceful curves. What makes this shot a little unusual is to see the rowing boats against a backdrop of modern building. They would seem more in place in an old fishing village. Nice touch to have the rope leading in from the corner of the frame.

A well composed shot of these little boats. You have achieved an excellent result both as to artistic effect and the contrast you refer to between the modest rowboats and the towering modern buildings. Instead of the rich man's yacht you give the viewer the traditional art of the simple craft, which is much more appealing in many ways...Even though I am a sailboat lover. Great ambience here. Another nice shot from this location, and a nice foreground arrangement. A little shame, perhaps, that the lead boat's oar is slightly out of frame.
Worshop version also looks nice. Tempting to edit this shot down to a tight square (?)

Alvin this photo of yours really shows some time was spent to find this setting. It adds such depth of distance to this scene. Just a little tight in the frame. There always seems to be alot to see in this area of Vancouver. Cheers Paul.

Excellent composition Alvin, the little boats leading the eye to the distance. Good DOF also. The wide angle has distorted the buildings to the left a little. Good colour tones too.

I like the contrast of the new in this shot Alvin. The boats also add to the perspective very nicely. Good Job.
