Today and yesterday were the first days we've had snow in a long long time. I think we had snow only 1 other day the entire winter season - but thats the norm for us on the west coast of Canada.
So that's a total of 3 snow days since November, but again, thats what we usually have. And when it does snow everyone panics, it's as if Armageddon is about to be unleashed upon our souls from the heavens above!
The city of Vancouver is not equipped to deal with snow, even in small amounts - so its total chaos.
Power lines fall down, homes go without power for days, schools are closed...its a real mess - and its laughable to be honest.
Our family grew up in Eastern Canada where its the opposite, it snows alot and cities are well prepared.
I will never forget my very first winter experience when we moved to Vancouver. I was sitting in class, in grade 10, and students noticed snow falling outside.
EVERYONE got up from their seats and RAN to the window to watch the snow fall. I was literally the ONLY student left sitting in their seat!
I remember thinking...IS THIS FOR REAL? Oh yes it was!
Vancouverites freak out when there's something other than Rain falling from the sky!!
Hope you like this winter scene in Stanley Park taken Today. I just liked the atmosphere with the snow coming down and the way its white and grey.
Thanks for looking

nice shot well presented, not always easy to take photo with fog, here the result is interesting with these water reflections, well managed.

Tu as bien capturé la jolie atmosphère hivernale du moment avec cette brume qui uniformise joliment les tons d'image.

rather "rare" scene to see Vancouver covered with snow, the more I enjoy the scene.Especially the mist(or is it a snowfall?)makes here so unique, gloomy atmosphere.
I like it!
Have a nice day

there is a beautiful atmosphere of cold here, the way the air is misty almost with the breath of those braving the icy conditions, camera in hand. THe scene has been almost bleached of color, but the color in it from the boats really pops out.
And you know, it does relieve me a little to know that Ireland is not the only place that has snow based Armageddon. A few years ago, Dublin airport closed because of snow, and it was only a light dusting. The news interviewed people who were stuck, and one Canadian lady said she did not understand, because she would not consider it snowing at all :) As you say, I guess it depends what you are used to, and Ireland certainly is not used to snow. Though it is very beautiful.
Thanks as always

Loved reading your notes.
It resonated with things that happen here, sometimes. We are not like the Scandinavians, who know that it will snow every year and are well prepared. Here it is variable and so it seems like a waste of money to spend lots of valuable cash on equipment that might only be used every ten years! Last year we were cut off by snow; this year we have had none (yet!).
Back to your shot which I love! It is so atmospheric! The diminishing clarity indicates the snow, whilst the cold colours emphasise it. A lovely composition. You have left space for the mast reflections to be fully realised.
Have a great day,

Sounds just like the UK:-) Not easy weather for the photographer but you have managed admirably well. I like the point of view and the use of the line of masts to draw the viewer into the scene. The background apartment blocks make an interesting contrast with the moored yachts.

Nice view of these sailing boats on the harbor. The masts seem to be matching those skyscrapers in the BG in terms of height. The skyscrapers covered by the fog and the mist makes this a atmospheric image. The little streaks of red and blue on the boats adds a dash of colour to the scene. A fine photo, thanks for sharing.

hehehe, I'd have been one of those students rushing to the window to see the snow fall. Having only seen it once or twice in my life, I'd be one pretty chuffed bunny to see it, and see it near water. Wow. Love the mist, the white blanket and of course the symmetry of the yacht masts, with their colours still vibrant, despite the overcast, snowy weather. Top shot, hey keep loading your Cuba shots, I'll never tire of them, I just thought it was nice to see some of Poland again.

seems that your English heritage kicks in when it snows because it sounds like here when the white stuff hits town. Totally unprepared and chaos ensues. This shot does capture that wonderful quiet atmosphere that falls along with the snow though. It dulls all the sounds and tends to blur the edges of everything which I find so attractive and eerily beautiful.
You asked about the old Shoreham Cement Works in my recent post. The buildings are derelict but the grounds are still used by the local cement company, so I did the right thing and asked at the gate whether I could go inside the building. Obvious answer "no it is too unsafe". I do know that a couple of local photographers have got shots of the machinery etc. inside. But apparently they are illegal and could be prosecuted for trespass. Would love to get inside, only way is to become an employee of the cement company I suppose - I could live with that for a week or two! ;-)

De quoi faire paniquer les services municipaux. Que va-t-on faire avec toute cette neige tombée durant la journée.Une proposition: attendez qu'elle fonde. Cela coûte moins cher. Par contre, cela offre de belles opportunités de photo.

This atmospheric wintry shot makes me shiver just looking at this, it's pleasantly composed with excellent glimpse of the diffuse bg but speck of vivid colours render so much live to this shot, Great capture.
williewhistler (16410) 2014-02-25 6:37
with the winter mist hanging over the city and the muted colours of the boats there is a distinct atmosphere of a chilly winters day here.
We did have a couple of days when the tops of Dartmoor were covered in snow but nothing worth getting excited about yet.
All the best Les.

great pov and thanks for braving the weather and clicking this amazing shot.love the snow flakes here.

This is an amusing note and a fine picture. The "forest" of masts create great reflections. It's amazing how winter and snow makes the colors disappear. This is perfectly exposed but the hazy winter light has given the colors a washed-out appearance that makes me think of a scanned picture.
rychem (40585) 2014-02-25 8:46
I like such "forest of masts", and behind in the BG you have taken a "forest of skyscrapers", beautiful and peaceful photo, the vertical format is very well chosen, good work

Ciao e buona serata

Hello Craig - Your description of the Vancouverites rushing to gawp at the snow fall mirrors exactly what Namibians do when it rains!.... I won't tell you what they do if it snows... and yes it does very occasionally :)
I love this shot, the colours seem to have been leeched out of the view except those that decorate the boats. The mood, your composition and the softness of colour all appeal to me and I think this is beautiful. Warm regards Rosemary

Like the mood of this still winter time:) The soft lights and cold tones of the scene made it really attractive and original. Elegant image, very well composed and managed.
saxo042 (37966) 2014-02-25 13:45
The water surface looks very calm and undisturbed here. The boats provide nice colours against the misty and grey background. The lines of the masts and their reflections also add a pleasant pattern.

Vancouver's more than welcome to take some of our snow... we've been buried this winter, and there's more on its way next week! This doesn't look too bad, just a bit overcast and a light flurry. Awesome that you caught it with such detail that I can make out individual flakes against the dark water! And hey, I'll be you were one of the few Vancouverites to venture out in such awful weather, eh?

your TE title describes the photo very well!
You have captured the situation excellently. And a very nice note is accompanying this fascinating documentary shot. My compliments also for the outstanding composition!

It was a slight surprise to realize that "Vancouver is not equipped to deal with snow"... as you had written, Craig - I had in mind all Canadian towns are ready for that, due to the latitude north of the USA.
Anyway, the interesting note taken me to the photo, and must say you managed a fairly good light over the marina, inspite the fog, and the image show nice reflection of the masts, and good clarity of the white boats over the grey background.
Have a nice Sunday,

Hi Craig, Amusing note about your experience with snow in Vancouver. This year we had only two weeks with snow but sometimes it can be long and a lot. I had guests from Internet from Brasil and they saw falling snow for the first time in their life. They were very happy about it. Beautiful photo, with delicate colours and a bit mystery with a fog. Very nice atmosphere, I like it.

Adverse weather makes for a good challenge in photography and I like those conditions. Nice capture of this harbor with good dof and nice details. Well done, tfs.
