Just as the title suggests, I'm having fun at the fair.
Every summer the PNE or Pacific National Exhibit is on for the month of August.
There are lots and lots of rides, roller coasters, exhibits, food vendors, concerts, you name it and its there.
So what I like to do instead of getting on the roller coasters and rides, I photograph them instead. I feel its much safer :) Not to mention its much more fun too! Especially when you wait for Blue Hour to arrive, and the lights are all on.
This ride is a straight up vertical, maybe about 200 feet high, and you spin around and around really fast....not for me!!!
I waited for the perfect moment. The white lights on the seats are illuminated, the yellow orange center piece moves up and down and is also illuminated.
During the exposure, the center piece looked as if its on fire! And the white lights show the spinning of the seats.
Hope you like it, I have many more that are similar.
Thanks for looking

Très belle et très spectaculaire photo à l'heure bleue de cette attraction en mouvement. Une belle réussite!

I am really impressed. You managed this shot in such a way I feel to look a SF movie. The choice of the 4s exposure was really the key point of this view; really making the difference.

Hi Craig, I also think that making photos of such roller coaster is much safer and cheaper. I can't even think I could use it. I can't understand what is the pleasure to have very high adrenaline level. Fantastic composition, real masterpiece. Awesome colours.
I have yesterday great fun in Warsaw with my camera too. there was a festival of world culture with sexy salsa dancers, Jewish festival and great weather still. I fill quite a lot memory.
have a nice week

Definitely not an experience for the faint-hearted! Still, the ride at night makes an excellent subject for the avid photographer. The graphism is sharply accentuated by the well chosen angle of view.
SnapRJW (23510) 2013-08-26 2:12
This is a super composition Craig. I am impressed with your exposure management, you have captured the movement of the ride really well and I love the dynamic whirling circle of light against the softly textured sky. The colours too are quite limited and harmonious which lends elegance to your fairground shot; nothing kitsch about this! A memorable piece of work. Warm regards rosemary

In rredible shot, without your othe, I would have no idea what I was looking at, and the thumbnail instantly made me think of some sort of intergalacti weapon warming up to fire. You chose a beautiful angle to present this too, for me enhancing the idea of shooting into space. The blue hour light with the detail in the sky against the lights of the ride are really perfect. Wondful scene, I think the best I've seen from a fairground. Thanks for sharing this.

like this! Thought it was rocket launch in the t/nail ;-). Conception and execution here are inspired and the effect something original and quite special. I applaud your creativity and technique here.
Have a good week - Brian.

Nous jouons tous deux avec les traits de la lumière en mouvement aujourd'hui. J'apprécie beaucoup cette photo qui fait preuve d'une technique impeccable.
ourania (18490) 2013-08-26 7:40
such a creative and fascinating minimal composition that conveys dynamism, sense of movement and action. The colours are beautiful and the way the light describes the scene and the action is fantastic. Exceptional work, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely week,
Bartleby (13238) 2013-08-26 8:46
love the result. It does look as if the center was on fire. A fine choice of exposure and a tilted composition that enhances the dizzy feeling.
rychem (13535) 2013-08-26 8:49
Very nice photo, the spin is well captured, great management of light, bravo
saxo042 (33854) 2013-08-26 9:06
A good idea with an excellent and very artistic result. But I do not think I would enjoy a ride in this torture equipment either.
eldancer1 (20674) 2013-08-26 9:21
Wow! It looks like a scene from a science fiction movie. Great use of timed exposure to get the effect and I like the effect to the mood. Good pov and dof with nice details. Awesome colors. Well done, tfs.
rigoletto (32710) 2013-08-26 10:39
apparently a space elevator is transporting a new shuttle to the outer space...
amazing photo with incredibly creative use of 4 seconds and tilt.
Oceania (3199) 2013-08-26 11:04
Look that white illuminated circle--excellently using long exposure here. In the center is orange fire ball. This picture is something technically skillful, at same time, very enjoyable.
mesutilgim (72828) 2013-08-26 11:32
Amazing capture with great graphical effect.
TFS and best regards

bello scatto, l'ottima esposizione ha creato un bel gioco di luci, contro il blu del cielo.
Originale la scelta del taglio.
krzychu30 (12605) 2013-08-26 14:24
Amazing shot Craig!
Haha at first(in the thumbnail)I thought you captured here a rocket breaking the sound barrier:)
You knew how to fool us:)
Brilliant composition!I like the tilt here and long shutter speed creating so eye-catching visual effect.
worldcitizen (5609) 2013-08-26 16:16
Hmmm...so, roller coasters and rides are not safe, but hanging out in dangerous cemeteries and climbing over ropes on the edge of trails is...!!! LOL! ;-) I understand that at least your feet were on solid ground in Peru and Iceland. :-) Now about the photo...the long exposure is great! It really does look like there are flames near the top, and the tilted presentation is cool. The blue hour sky is also a beauty.
fotoguy22 (4510) 2013-08-26 18:24
Wow, Craig, this is fantastic! Perfect exposure with the right amount of light in the sky and awesome motion shown. And whatever that fire is burning in the tower (I'm sure it's not a fire but it looks like one) it looks like the sun with orbiting planets, or the nucleus of an atom and surrounding electrons. Just great!
Greetings from Florida..................Greg

Hi Craig - back from a little TE breather. I love this shot - a bit of sci-fi here, and a lot of drama in the dynamic lighting. The tilt adds a lot to it.
Somehow I missed three or four opportunities for blue hour fairground shots this summer... having an infant really cramps one's photographic style (except, of course, for the literally thousands of shots of said infant). But I'll live those shots vicariously here, especially as you do them so wonderfully - the light here - not only on the ride but also in the sky beyond - is just exquisite. Thanks!
Indrasish (2329) 2013-08-26 21:21
Excellent shot here.. Love the composition and the nice warm colors.. Here 4s exposure works well.. You got a roundish zig zag pattern.. Very creative shot.. Superb image quality and nice colors too.. And thanks for attaching an interesting note with it.. Very well done..
Best wishes from Kolkata and cheers..
adidas5nb (2821) 2013-08-26 22:19
fantastic is the word.love the framing, with the base coming out as a diagonal.great imagery and thinking.very artistic pic.and the blue hour makes it even more fantastic.great light management great timing.
marabu61 (5863) 2013-08-27 1:49
This is definitly not for me either, or rather not anymore, I used to enjoy these crazy rides when younger.
Very dynamic take of this dizzing ride indeed. The spinning wheel looks so fast here, the center column seems to have a ring of fire around it and the general diagonal framing of the whole scene makes it truly amazing.
enjoy the fair
danos (78030) 2013-08-27 6:55
great the view of the roller with its well light column to be placed perfect in the frame and the lighted seats to create an excellent optical effect.
The shot during the blue hour in an extra beautiful element in the scene.
Cricri (92015) 2013-08-27 9:37
PiotrF (2380) 2013-08-27 12:06
Nice composition and nice use of diagonal. I am really impressed.
Very well done.
jcpix (6456) 2013-08-28 14:40
These have been some great shots (referring of course to your next post's as well), and as much I enjoyed all of them, I kept coming back to this one the most! What a dynamic image...I think it's the break and the lined patterns in the spinning wheel that draws me in more so than the others.
Then you have the reddish, orange glow of its base...looks kind of devilish. :) On top of that there's the blue hour sky, filled with clouds for even more effect and the angle of this composition. Man, I'd say you certainly covered the bases for visual and reality entertainment, this turned out incredibly well!
I don't know if it's a good thing or not, but with our age ranges, why is it now more fun to photograph these rides than actually taking a spin on one?? :) You got the right moment for sure, this turned out fantastic!
Enjoy your evening. Take care.
mjw364 (6136) 2013-08-28 14:53
Nice image - I like it a lot! It reminds me of some kind of radio antenna in a sci fi movie!
marina7 (7160) 2013-08-30 12:30
you're a master of surprise photos, I find your experiments very original and creative. This one is stunning in all respects. It looks like some kind of a cosmic antenna to me... just think of people having fun up there:)
Hansaphotos (6047) 2013-09-04 15:06
Excellently composed scene. Perfect lighting and wonderful effect of the motion. Love it:) TFS.

You must experienced much fan composing this very creative capture and waiting for the blue hour
olive224 (2465) 2013-09-05 5:03
Excellent idea to shoot this spinning wheel
very well realised
It's like abstract art
tatadalou (3975) 2013-09-09 11:06
Both pictures of this ride are nice but I prefer this one for the beauty of the sky behind and the great light management. Excellent sharpness.
CLODO (26345) 2013-09-10 5:01
blue hour, a tripod, a long exposure, a researched POV and tilt are the ingredients of this splendid picture.
