The light of the city come alive at Howe street (I think, Craig please correct if not right) in central Vancouver while we can still have a glimpse of the magnificent mountains that form the beautiful backdrop of Vancouver

City in motion, clicked from the center of the busy road.
Dangerous, isn't it?
How could you freeze the moving vehicles with shutter speed of 1/25 ?
Shaken and skeptic about the exif data.

Let me guess, it was at a pedestrian crossing with the light green for pedestrians. Otherwise, it was a dangerous thing to do, don't do it again! (For visual emphasis, the right index finger is extended and shaken at about 1 Hz.) Well, whatever the risks were, an exquisite blue hour photo materialized from your efforts. Well seen and skillfully rendered.

Good presentation of the evening Vancouver. Is this a mountain on the background? Good point of view, excellent exposure. Clever title, it reminds me classic "Big City Lights" and "Big City Nights" of the Scorpions.

Very attractive street photograph!
Special regards to the vertical format, chosen pov, exposure, colors and composition!
I really enjoy the details of the mountains with low clouds in the bg, the neon lights and the traffic lights!
TFS - congrats,
Enjoy your week-end,

I like the mood of this shot Daniel. The natural light wanes and the neon signs and car lights take on a brilliance which contrasts well with the surroundings. I can imagine people hurrying home to enjoy their evening meals and a time of relaxation. Your slight upward POV leads the eye naturally to the misty mountain in the BG. A super composition and one that is packed with atmosphere. Looking at you FL I think you had time to jump away from any out-of-control vehicles! Have a lovely evening Rosemary

Why the fuss I wonder about the shutter speed and the moving cars? If they had been moving across the frame they would present as more or less motion-blurred, depending on their speed (as you say in your reply), but as they are moving pretty much directly towards and away from you, the issue barely arises, and 1/25 sec is plenty fast enough. Much more impressive is your ability to hand hold (I assume) a long lens at such a shutter speed without getting the shakes. I don't believe the Tamron 18-270 has image stabilization, but on the other hand, it's surprisingly small/light/compact, so even at 270mm, as it looks as though you were, it's not too cumbersome.
I like the wild country in the background. Somehow it seems to stand for all of Canada: pockets of tamed urbanity surrounded by miles of wilderness!

Une scène de rue bien capturée à l'heure bleue avec une bonne gestion de la lumière et un bon format vertical. Bravo!

I know this street very well, it seems funny to actually see it on TE :)
Don't mean to correct you Daniel, but you asked if this is Howe Street, its actually Granville Street. Directly behind you is the Granville Street Bridge, which would give you stunning views over the water and into downtown...did you walk across Granville Bridge??
This street is very popular in Vancouver because it's the Night Pub Crawl, the Downtown Club Scene area. Most of the popular night/dance clubs are located directly down that street we're looking at.
Looking at the signs...The Vogue theatre and the Orpheum are fantastic venues for small intimate music concerts - very popular.
And to answer Serghei question, Yes, in the bg are the North Shore Mountains.
I enjoy the photo alot, the lights are bright and luminous, fine shot!
looking forward to see whats next

Very Impressive low light cityscape taken straight on and a superb compressed perspective revealing the imposing colorful street and buildings with lot more detail to enjoy and the glowing glittery naturally leads the eye in. Lovely capture. Well done. Congrats

I am sure Craig is so jealous right now that someone shows an original view of his city at the blue hour.
Fantastic POV here in the middle of the road. I like how the mountains rise so high behind the high buildings. It works very impressive. Great timing at the blue hour -you caught a very nice atmosphere here.

you chose a good moment to get this impressive shot with the cars and their lights all very nicely placed to give a fine perspective.
There is a good contrast between the busy street and the distant mountain.

You're showing us a colorful street scene in Vancouver. The neon signs are glowing under the dark sky. It's very attractive.
EstudioChispa (1694) 2013-08-19 12:03
This is a great example, Daniel, of innately knowing when most of the light sources in a scene are in balance. I doubt this would have worked this well fifteen minutes earlier or fifteen minutes later. A great "Postcard from Vancouver!"
bona (11166) 2013-08-19 12:43
nice photo with this nice twilight light. I like the many neon sight very colorful and the cars lights too.

Superb blue hour shot with all the nights and excellent sharpness. I have the feeling you were driving when you took the shot, otherwise you would had been standing in the middle of the road. Good photo job

Daniel, I like this picture for its beautiful light, for the bg contrast and for the vertical...I wish you would have taken some pictures in Greece too...

i had never seen vancouver from "inside". seems to be quite photogenic as its outside. the scene is likely to be taken from a movie, i imagined hexagonized headlamps of the cars and blurred neons...
Kielia (21519) 2013-09-02 8:46

Nice picture with a nice depth effect.
