With a little hesitancy, i upload this photo today.
I wasn't sure how it would be received because of the yellow trim, but I thought...why not!
This is a photo of the Astoria Hotel in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver. The seedy, drug infested, homeless area that has made headlines around the world. Believe it or not, this area in Vancouver is poorer than the worst areas in Detroit, Miami, LA, NYC, Chicago...anywhere in North America! And its all right here close to home - just a couple of blocks from where I shoot all my architecture scenes!!
I've been wanting to photograph this Hotel for a LONG TIME now. It takes courage to bring a tripod and camera gear into this area, as you make yourself a huge target - something i've experienced myself in the past where as I was assaulted and chased.
A simple thing as bringing a buddy helps, and also going at the smartest time. This was photographed early in the morning, when most people were still tripped out on their drugs and havn't woken up yet!
The Astoria is an ugly marvel of a hotel, but it has charm with its Neon lights. Many hotels in this area have the same sort of charm. Known for its bed bugs, its crime, its seedy characters, this hotel is a winner in terms of a photographic subject.
In the WS, i'll add a photo of another seedy Hotel..called The Patricia, which is just a 1 min walk down the street from the Astoria
Hope you like it.

A beautiful B&W photo with details of yellow. Excellent pov and the low angle increase the depth sensantion.
I'm sorry because my daily limit is full so ı can't give mark.
PecoBud (3824) 2012-06-12 13:32
NICE!! Very nostalgic look here, great PP work, and love that bit of yellow. Excellent POV and superb clarity, just wonderful!! Beautiful job here Craig!!
TFS..........Your Friend from California.........Buddy

Craig, this is an almost theatrical shot - I could see this as part of the opening sequence of a neo-noir detective movie. Very atmospheric feel to it, almost foreboding. The yellow only accents that, it doesn't detract. Technically, it's also quite lovely, with the angles of the sign and building coming off that strong central line, and a great POV. Wonderful shot!
worldcitizen (8472) 2012-06-12 18:55
I like the POV and the old-fashioned neon sign. I see that this establishment is a "seven star" hotel. ;-) You can also get your fill of alcohol right downstairs. Very convenient! This shot certainly does have a film noir feeling to it. It is amazing that you are willing to risk life and limb for some interesting photos. Well done...and stay safe!
jjcordier (79297) 2012-06-12 23:05
Un noir et....jaune original! J'aime le cadrage original et la désaturation partielle.
emka (95349) 2012-06-12 23:38
Do you make all your shots with tripod? Why were you assaulted and chased? But then, tripod can be used as a weapon to defend. Gosh, i am looking forward to see you with tripod , I will take mine and it will be fun.. This hotel has some charm and seven stars! it is like hotel in Dubai, luxurious :). After your description, I wouldn't feel at ease there.
Looks like a scene from the movies.

A very interesting note you have given us about this rather rough and seedy part of Vancouver. You have obviously chosen exactly the right time of day to tackle this area and your photography here. Having read your discussions with André in the past, I would be the same as yourself - I try to avoid confronation at all costs! Photography, after all, is a hobby and a pleasurable one and I don't see why that should be upset by confrontation with ne'er-do-wells.
Again, subtle use of HDR (thanks for the "y"!) has worked extremely well here, particularly in showing up the textures of the brickwork. In fact, I suspect that it shows it better than it is in real life. The selective desaturation has worked wonderfully well too and the yellow frame of the "Astoria Hotel" sign is a lovely graphic image in its own right.
Perfect exposure, lovely light and, as always, stunning sharpness too. Your workshop picture is similarly excellent.
P.S. I've just discovered a sneaky trick. If I can see your shutter speed in your exif data, then it's not HDR, but if I can't see it, then it is! :o)
Budapestman (82620) 2012-06-13 2:55
a splendid shot with effective composition and graphic details and I like the atmosphere of the photo and the attractive POV, the note is superb, too. Tfs! Have a nice week! Kellemes hetet kívánok!

Du bien beau travail. A partir de la prise de vue avec une très belle contre plongée, au traitement de post production qui est impressionnant et dramatique.Bravo.

I like the image, you had a good idea and the visual result is interesting, the perspective and the light effect create a good composition,
npecanhuk (74914) 2012-06-13 5:37
Very interesting and attractive urban picture, specially because of its chosen pov, vertical format, composition and the effect that mixed black & white and colors (the yellow color more specifically)!
TFS - congrats,
timecapturer (49288) 2012-06-13 7:02
an inspired and artistic shot and composition. Has a Hitchcock feel about it and your post processing adds not only atmosphere but that little piece of magic. I love it, especialy the explosive effect of the reflected light in the lower window. Stunning mate, want it in my gallery!!
Regards - Brian.

Love this ambiance... It could be a poster of a 50s movie.
You've done a great work to get this attractive result : the low-angle shot, the fine quality and the striking opposition between yellow and black.... Brilliant.
jlbrthnn (76037) 2012-06-13 8:08
The color highlights the excellent exposure of this black and white. The framing is remarkable. A spectacular photo and excellent quality. Bravo.
Have a nice day
ManuMay (36097) 2012-06-13 9:09
Excellent capture...I love its special mood and the way you have composed and realized...that looks 50´s !!
Very nioce idea to post in B&W with the yellow touch...and a good theme for me, as I spend most of my day inside a Hotel!! ;)
magalik (6103) 2012-06-13 11:36
Such an outstanding work you made on this shot...
Love the mood you succeeded to get. Love the moody shots like this. As a member told you, it looks like a scene from an old movie, inspired from a polar for sure. It makes me think about the Godfather.
Like the dusty texture on the hotel that your b&w work gives. The heavy sky in the same tones as the hotel contributes to the mood too.
Night is interesting for b&w photography, for getting moody shots, funny also to play with street lighting as you made here.
Really a very good image. A favorite for me. Sincere compliments.
Very glad to see this kind of works here, so unusual. Creative, moody, b&w, sad atmosphere and I like that ! :)
And you know what : hope that you will propose others like this one ! :-p I will be there ! ;)

Very fine detail with the classical advertising structure. Very beautiful, well catch.
francio64 (39888) 2012-06-13 13:29
un hotel a 7 stelle? Super lusso!
Ottima la prospettiva.
Mi piace la quasi totale desaturazione, lasciando a colori soltanto una parte dell'illuminazione dell'insegna.
Well done and TFS!
gezimania (6166) 2012-06-14 2:07
Yes the most intersting point here is your POV here to obtain the much perspective , love it by your POV and treatment , bravo !
Cricri (117927) 2012-06-14 5:19
Superbe le cadrage et la désaturation partielle, excellent travail et image comme dans un film en N/B, ou l'atmosphère est un peu étrange comme un film Hitchcock, superbe
krzychu30 (15512) 2012-06-14 9:49
just one word:awesome. The idea of B&W composition with only yellow neon was great. Also the upward POV provides us with excellent view of the hotel and its neon.I don´t know how you,but your picture reminds me of the movie "Sin City" and its characteristic atmosphere.Great work!
Have a nice day
Waylim (25502) 2012-06-14 12:06
Very good night shot. Excellent PP work with mostly b&w but just the golden neon light. this give a sense of Hollywood in the 60's deco.
bayno (18344) 2012-06-15 0:11
a six star shot ;) i like so mach the PP work with the partial desaturation, nice perspective from the below and special atmosphere, the cloude sky is perfect for this snap and you set very well your camera...nice one...
have a good day...

Hi Craig !!
it was worth the risk and the effort...... and a good idea to take it in the morning.
This photo is superb...... and the yellow trim......the icing in the cake.
I do not want to repeat what has been said already..... it is all valid.
have a nice week end.
siolaw (38292) 2012-06-16 12:03
This has a strong "film noir" atmosphere, thanks to the desaturation and the shooting angle. The yellow lines highlight the graphics well too.
Fine job here!
brianmcc (6219) 2012-06-17 12:41
this is a cracking presentation. your low viewpoint looking upwards has created an intreging image. excellent sharpness and detail in the building. love the black and white, which is quite dramatic and full of character, while the yellow neon just gives the image a wonderful quality.
ChrisJ (112403) 2012-06-18 1:54
Looks like this was received VERY favourably! Yellow trim is very common in China. I like the dark b&w tones that give this image the look of an Alfred Hitchcock still from a horror movie. Superb pp work yet without overdoing it imho. Good upward pov & nice management of perspective. Tfs!
Robert1969 (7160) 2012-06-18 11:08
Great point of view, composition and
light management. This with the dark
clouds, B&W, with only yellow neon
light, creates a very delicious
exciting atmosphere, that can used
for the second Sin City movie and
it's a picture that is timeless...
Goes to my favorites.
papagolf21 (99820) 2012-06-18 11:40
Excellente composition. Nous avons l'impression d'assister à un vieux film en noir et blanc. Le cadrage est parfait. L'ambiance qui se dégage de l'ensemble est emplie de mystère, voire de suspens.
Quant à la touche de couleur, une réussite totale !
adores (45029) 2012-06-20 18:52
It was surely a great idea! I like the pov and your idea really worked - the yellow stands out very well here! Somehow, the building and the curtains give me the idea it's an old photo! The cloudy sky also gives it a special atmosphere! Worth the risk:)!I like it!
delpeoples (57278) 2012-06-23 15:49
I thought I'd critiqued this but it must have been that I saw it on FB. It really is a great shot and the partial desaturation was a masterstroke. The angles are great, as is the post-processing which has give the image a real glow. Fantastic POV, excellent vertical frame and good strength in contrast and black and white tones.
Suffering a little TEBO (TE Burnout) at the moment, but couldn't resist this beauty :)
Have a good weekend
Angshu (56750) 2012-06-24 0:55
The yellow trimming is actually the most important part of this image..makes it very eye catching. The distortion created by your super-wide lens is excellent. Also there seems to be some clouds in the sky which creates a better BG for the neon signboard, as compared to perhaps a clear sky.
I feel you may try a visit to this area (keeping yourself safe of course...that's primary) in a time when the sky is broody with dark clouds...would create an ominous feel to this picture as well (considering the not so pleasant neighborhood of this place) .
With Regards & have a great week
Hansaphotos (7985) 2012-06-24 12:42
Sorry for my late reply. This is a very attractive photo. The lighting and the b&w choice creates a wonderful mystic mood. The neon sign with its yellow line is a great addition to this nice urban scene. Fantastic work:) TFS. Enjoy your Sunday.
Best regards, Erling

When I was going through your gallery I saw a lot of picture looking up. I like this one in B&W with touch of yellow. Excellent pov, composition and light management.
ilDottore (5252) 2012-08-27 18:20
Excellent shot, indeed.
It looks like a frame from Sin City movie.
Desaturation was a good idea here, also composition is very eye-catching.
Greetings from Dublin!
