One of my favorite things to do is getting up super early when the downtown city streets are bare, they seem lifeless, the city is still asleep.
As a photographer, I have the luxury of doing things I normally can't - such as placing my tripod right in the middle of a busy street - which i did right here.
I had enough time to get down really low to the concrete, probably only the birds were watching.
On a personal note, this is one of my favorite photos of the Vancouver downtown core. The reason for that?
I didn't notice until after i took the photo and viewed it at home - but do you recall the Vancouver harbour centre? the 300 foot tall lookout point which i've posted on TE before? Its actually the shadow in the middle of this scene! I've never seen that shadow of the building before. In the WS, i'll post the Harbour Centre to show you, and you'll be able to recognize its shape.
I know that inner city shots look great with tons of people and activity, but this shows the opposite, which can also be attractive - especially if you're there to witness the dead silence of the city.
Have a great day

Fantastic architectural capture with great composition, detail and color. Well done!

beautiful cityscape.Just you and this stunning architecture. It was definitely worth to get up early to take such great picture.I like the POV you choose and the framing. The image has also superb clarity and lighting.
The view is like a quintessence of North American urban planning and a pleasure for all lovers of this kind of architecture.

Hello Craig. Successful modern architectural photographs. Beautiful lights and shadows. Small distortion. Good crop, the portrait emphasizes the vertical direction of tower blocks. Nice colors, good contrast. friends of Justice Csaba

what a marvelous image! I like a lot the graphical effect that you create and the big shadow on the facades of the palaces. Well done, great image.
Congratulations and TFS

Superb shot of this wonderful modern design! Like your low point of view which give an opportunity to admire the buildings. Very well done with a top class. Impressive image. TFS.

Beautiful city shot, the photographers hate cars disturbing to take a good photo, you have here a bare street

An interesting way to present these sky-scrapers without ant presence of sky at all. Thi scluster of building make a very good pattern!

Eheheheh!
Appassionato di grattacieli come me.

well, Craig - this is a cool shot, it has something cinematic about it, looks like one of those scenes where the main character wakes up to a deserted, empty city where everybody was annihilated overnight...
everything is left untouched, clean, shiny and new - too good to be true, right? :)
top quality, clear, sharp and well framed.

I loved the title!
I really enjoyed the picture!
Empty streets in a big city is a bit gloomy!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, chosen pov, vertical format, slim black borders, contrasts and composition are all excellent!
TFS - congrats,

You never cease to leave me with puzzles to sort out - first, "Is it or is it not HDR?" and, next, "Where is this?"
You have given us the answer to the first question - this one is indeed HDR and so subtly done as usual.
To answer the second one, I do believe that if you look at this map and drag the yellow man down to the red cross and then "pan" around, you will find yourself on West Cordova Street looking westward just before it crosses Howe Street. You, of course, have obviously used a long lens for this one and that has foreshortened the perspective a lot. Because the sun rises in the east, I also managed to find the Harbour Centre (oops, sorry - center) which cast the shadow, behind you.
Sorry about all that, Craig, but I'm always up for a challenge!
After your last couple of postings, this one is clearly more in your own particular "comfort zone" and it is exceptional. The foreshortening of the perspective with a long lens has had a lovely effect and really shows off the height of these modern buildings. The colours, lighting, exposure and sharpness are magnificent. Well worth getting out of bed early for this one!

good composition and presentation of modern Vancouver. Amazing big towers. Photo is well dona and I like it.

Despite the early, quiet hour of your shot, the shadow play across the high-rise buildings adds a liveliness to the scene Craig. The soft tones, and colours combined with the early light and shadows come together with a 'gentleness' not normally seen in architectural work. Very attractive and worth getting up early for! Warm regards rosemary

Hi Craig, such a view of the city without and activity, cars or people, nas something scary. Like from the movies. But it is worth getting up early and in fact, in January it is no so early. Well, I would like to see you with yor tripod in the middle of busy street, or rather not as it can be dangerous. When the street is empty the people drive vey fast. But the result is fantastic, excellent composition, etc. Warm regards Malgo

Wow, Vancouver in ghost town mode. It really seems like another city at that hour. As you know, I'm not a morning person, but I really appreciate seeing others do the hard work, get up early and achieve something that not many of us see. On the rare occasions when I do get up early, I'm always glad I did, as there's a special atmosphere in the solitude of the morning. Interesting also the shadow of one of your favourite buildings and the WS makes it clearer. The WS is beautiful too, by the way. Nice work, thanks for another view of your beautiful city.
Have a good weekend

Hi dear Craig, how are you?
Once again an impressive shot!
No one there and all windows--- very professional idea!
I cannot help having a sigh honestly.
Thanks for your sharing with nice job and have a good weekend!

Now, this is really splendid. A very nice capture from the urban jungle. The fact that the streets are empty for people makes it more interesting, I think, the arcitecture gets all the attention. The shadow has a great visual impact. Superb:) TFS. Enjoy your weekend.
Best regards, Erling

By far, this is the greatest architectural posting you've ever shared! Love the clear street scene, the perfectly exposed buildings thus giving us super fine details and texture and the wide portrait format. Stunning POV and very impressive composition! I just love it, clear, sharp and clean! Bravo! my compliments!
see you around!
P.S. Do you always bring your camera to work? You seem to bring in everyday as you always capture decisive moments of VA. =)

Hi craig. A weiterews photo with your typical handwriting. Small cars make the proportions significantly. Overall, a watchable shot. Rgds, Wolfgang.

nice vertical view, makes the lines and shapes of the big building looks more higher. nice details we can enjoy here, good graphic mood.

adramad (40166) 2012-06-11 9:53
A superb composition, in this plane closed in on the facades of large buildings, the lonely street is amazing and gives a good perspective to the picture, all those hundreds of windows to give a striking graphic composition.
A different and very attractive image. Well done.
Have a nice day.
mjw364 (7516) 2012-06-11 14:18
Great shot - well composed. The low shooting point really emphasises the scale of the buildings. Nice balance to the image overall too. Thanks for sharing.
serp2000 (41866) 2012-06-12 10:28
Outstanding presentation of the stone jungle. Great timing shot, without the people it looks more impressive.
Perfect quality. TFS!
Have a good time!

Hi, my friend Craig,
the fact of getting up early, offers you a few great moments, as this one, in which you have taken a photo with your tripod in the middle of a deserted street, something impossible in the rest of the day.
I like a lot this composition, with the overlapping of several buildings, its fantastic architecture, the sensation of silence in this street, and of course, the enormous shade on the fronts of both buildings.
The result is a very attractive composition, perfectly executed.
Vancouver seems to me a nice town to visit.
chawax (19766) 2012-06-17 2:12
Cities in Europe have not at all this kind of architecture so I have very few opportunity to see such urban sceneries and I enjoy to see such photos on TE. It looks like a forest of steel and glass ! The vertical format increases the feeling of height.
korbee (6617) 2012-06-22 0:10
Every time I can see form the thumbnail that we are in Vancouver, the reflection from the blue skies into the glass buildings,
This is well cropped Craig and worth to get up early,I guess normally theres no way to stand on that spot and slowly take a picture ;=]
ikeharel (62041) 2012-06-25 7:52
Fine shadows play on early morning shot, on a busy-empty road intersection.
Clearity of the buildings show excelent reflection and neat outlines.
pierrefonds (59754) 2012-07-14 16:25
The length of the street is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the architecture of the highrise buildings, I like the shadow of the Vancouver Harbour centre in the windows of the buildings. The morning light is giving nice tints to the colors. Have a nice day.
