Light in the Dark Photo

Photographer’s Note

It seems to be happening more and more often to me.....where i'm taking a photo of a subject, when, all of a sudden i notice something completely different that catches my eye.

I was photographing symmetrical patterns on a wall, when i looked down to check a photo previously taken - beside my feet was this scene.

It was taken in Fort Langley near the Railroad Station, in the downtown, Old town centre.
As mentioned, i wanted to photograph the old trains, and the many old wooden structures with alot of Character - but i'm happy with what i walked away with.

Good evening Craig. Nice capture here with good visual aspects inside the frame. Your comments on finding new photos while shooting a subject is always one of the most rewarding aspects of photography itself. There are two kinds of photos that come to us. The first comes from the photographers who trophy hunt for their photos. They race to the scene with careful calculated timing aspiring to be at the right time and place for the ultimate photo capture. When they have finished their pursuit they race off to the next setting to repeat the process all over again.
The second kind of photographer so chooses to immerse himself into a scene, and allows the scene to come to him. This is done by keeping the minds eye wide open for surprises that will surface in the process. This kind of immersion photography is what I see in this photo and I think for you its perhaps more rewarding not for what you were looking for on the outset, but because the view came to you from simply being there.

The mood of this shot is very old world, European to me. It also emits a very mysterious quality. A well captured image despite it being in a puddle. A creative shot indeed! The more I look at it the more I am fond of it's uniqueness and feeling it projects.

I agree entirely with the comment from PJE. Sometimes the best photos we get are those that appear spontaneously rather than those we contrive to capture. On several ocassions I have looked behind from where I was intending to shoot and been rewarded with something special and unexpected.

Well seen. The light is the only colour in this otherwise monochromatic image. My office used to be in the Fort so I know this place.

a very atmospheric picture and a wonderful story of it`s origin. For me, these kind of pictures are some of the best ones one can take, they come when you do not expect them, and it feels good to walk home with a unique shot,

A very good idea and a nice shot with these incredible reflections. Excellent framing and composition well balanced with the reflection well located on the left of the image. The barrier in the reflections give rythm and dynamism.

Hi Maca,
I saw this photograph in thumbnails the other day and was drawn toward its presence. However, other things in my life took me away. But I am back (due to you kind critique) and now have opportunity to comment. Yes, great reflective composition. Well captured. Nicely framed. Good focus. I find that also - we go off to capture something that is in our mind and end up with something different which we are please with. :)

A beautifull reflection in what could just have been an pool of water. Yes, taking pictures sharpens the eye (at least when you are in a mood for it).

Hi Craig,

I love the simplicity and creativity of this shot. This is very well spotted and for sure I recognize the situation you describe in your excellent note, when your intention is to photograph something else and you all of sudden discover completely different. What is very creative here is that you make use of the tiling in your composition and how the edge of the puddle forms a perfect diagonal line. An excellent photo-job indeed.
