Photographer’s Note
While on vacation at Long Beach on the west coast of Vancouver Island I came across these two Haida canoes that were tied up near the public wharf. These canoes are carved out of a single cedar log and you can see the carving marks on the inside of the canoe.

Goodness Phil you are either up very late or very early! This is a very creative framing of the canoes. I love the vibrance of the orange interiors. Well spotted

Hi Phil,
The simplicity makes it wonderful with the charming red (or orange?) .The canoes look like they are floating in air as the water is calm.
Congrats and have a nice Sunday,
Zeynep

Hi, Phil.
Most creative and shrouded in vibrant colors. I appreciate this kind of minimalism, so to speak, almost trespassing into impressionism. There's a sort of continuity in those chopped off pirogues that extends beyond the frame boundaries. This kind of chopping/cropping is what a number of impressionists used to do in their paintings to achieve that very same "stretching beyond boundaries" type of feel. Excellent job, TFS! Have a good sunday, see ya soon.
Fulvio.

Hi Phil,
A very unusual perspective but surprisingly effective. The shapes are interesting and the strong colors and contrasts work well here. Well done and TFS. Gerald

Hi Phil,
Wonderfully vivid colors and strikingly sharp details to these beautiful native canoes.
Love the green water catching the highly textured reflection and of course the bits of sea weed clinging to the rope.
Regards, Tom

Hi Phil,
First of all, thanks a lot for adding me to your favourites. It's a great honour! :o)
I absolutely love this shot. Great colours and sharpness and a good composition. The subject is something you don't see very often here on TE. Those waters look very familiar to me (I've been on several multi-day sea kayaking trips that started in Tofino) but I've never seen any of those canoes there. Do you know if they are "private" ones or if they are used for tours? It would be a fascinating experience to paddle in one of them.
Thanks for sharing, have a great day

Hi, Phil -
This is more interesting as a creative shot than as a documentary shot - which is perfectly fine by me! Nice touch of green amid all the red, too.
Best,
Dan
