Its from looking at the thumbnail only that it seems that the surfer leaning against the pole has one long set of legs. The water temp only changes 4 degrees from winter to summer. This is why they need wet suits to enjoy surfing along these shorelines. Enjoy.

The cold atmosphere of the picture is contrasting with the surfers lying on the sand and trying to enjoy some sun.

Well seen. It does look odd at first glance. A very typical West Coast day at Long Beach. the towel adds a bit of colour on this overcast day.
