"Meadow Bird" Photo

Photographer’s Note

Anyone know what type of bird this is?

A shot from the 'Meadows In the Sky Parkway" just outside of Revelstoke, BC.
These little opportunistic birds have become quite tame as they know that with visitors often comes food. Hopefully the bears are not making the same assumption!

I'm not overly impressed with the sharpness of this shot (taken handheld with a Canon 70-200mm L series lens and a 2x extender) even though it was taken at 1/640th. Guess I should have used my monopod.

Great shot Dan! I like the blurred out background, which really makes the bird stand out incredibly well. You may not be impressed with the sharpness of your shot, but I am! Great work!

Hi dan,
Yes, I agree with you, the eye of the bird doesn't seem as sharp as it could be (The tree seems sharper).
Anyway, the compo and exposure are great :)
For the name of the bord, maybe you should post on treknature ?! ;-)

Hey Daniel I see you have posted a photo of a Whiskey Jack. They like to dwell in higher elevations, will take food right out of your hand. I have seen them up Manning Park, on Mt Washington, and up Mt Whistler as well. Excellent shot Dan. Thanks for sharing....

What's in a name? Well our First Nations people knew this creature as "wiss-ka-tjon" or "wis-ka-chon". In the old-time lumbering days the Jay would visit the lumberjacks in the northern forests of Canada. In turn, the lumberjacks shared their grub with it and came to call it "Whiskey-Jack". Now the bird's modern "common" name is "Gray Jay" or "Canada Jay"(and its scientific name is Perisoreus Canadensis).

Hi Dan
This is a Whiskey Jack although I see Paul has already identified it for you. They are cheeky birds and will steal your lunch given half a chance. I like this shot and it looks sharp to me. I see this web site is having its problems again.
